Towson Baseball Downed in Pitching Duel to Open Series at Northeastern

BROOKLINE, Mass. – Josh Seils had a strong start against the current first-place team of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) North, but the Towson University baseball team fell to Northeastern 3-0 to open the weekend series.

Towson (15-26, 5-4 CAA) and Northeastern (20-6, 8-0 CAA) engaged in a scoreless affair through the first four innings.  The Huskies broke through with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth, and later insurance in the seventh.  Towson got the potential tying run to the plate in the eighth, but could not get on the board.

Key Stats:
  • Josh Seils (2-5) went 6.2 innings, allowing three runs, only one earned, in his start.  Cam Clark pitched Towson out of a seventh inning, bases loaded jam while Matt Watters threw a flawless eighth inning with a strikeout.
  • At the plate, Javon Fields hit 2-for-4, Towson's lone multi-hit player.  Billy Godrick reached base twice, going 1-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch.
  • For Northeastern, Jeff Costello went 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.  Starter Cam Schlittler (4-0) notched the victory, throwing seven scoreless innings with eight strikeouts.  Brandon Dufault got his third save of the year after pitching the ninth with no runs and two strikeouts.
How It Happened:
  • The game started out as a pitcher's duel between Towson starter Josh Seils and Northeastern starter Cam Schlittler.  Each went through the first four innings unscathed.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, a fielding error turned into NU's first run, as three batters later, Jeff Costello brought him in on a safety squeeze.  Scott Holzwasser hit a single up the middle to bring in another unearned run to make it 2-0 Huskies.
  • Seils pitched another strong inning to get through the sixth, but in the seventh, Spenser Smith hit an RBI single with one out to increase the NU lead to 3-0.  NU got the bases loaded, but Cam Clark entered, inducing a pop out and ending the inning with any more damage.
  • Towson's best chance came in the top of the eighth inning, beginning the frame with a couple of hit-by-pitches with no outs.  NU went to the bullpen and held without giving up a run.  Towson fell 3-0.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Josh Seils made his 31st career start on the mound at Towson, tying for sixth all-time in program history.
  • Northeastern has won 10 straight games.
Next Game:
Tomorrow, Towson and Northeastern will play a doubleheader, beginning at 11 a.m. in Brookline.
