BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Towson University baseball team nearly came back in both contests against the first place team in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) North with the potential tying run at the plate in the ninth in each game, but fell in both games of the doubleheader 2-1 and 7-4.
Towson (15-28, 5-6 CAA) rallied in the ninth of game one at Northeastern (22-6, 10-0 CAA), with a
Noah Cabrera RBI single putting the tying run on second with one out, but the Huskies held with two flyouts to end the game.
In game two, Towson scored twice in the seventh to take a 4-3 lead. Northeastern hit a pair of home runs in the final three innings. Towson tried for a final rally with back-to-back walks, but a line out ending the game.
Key Stats:
- On the pitching mound, Nick Janowicz (2-2) got the defeat in game one despite a strong six-inning start, going six innings with four strikeouts and two runs, only one earned. Kody Reeser finished the game with two scoreless frames, striking out two. For game two, Nick Ramanjulu got a no decision with six innings, three runs and three strikeouts. The loss went to Austin Weber (1-1), who had two runs and three strikeouts in the seventh.
- Danny Becerra hit safely in each game, combining to go 2-for-7 with three runs and two walks. Jake Lysaght was 2-for-6, scoring a run while Nolan Young was a combined 2-for-7, driving in two runs and having a walk.
- For Northeastern, Jared Dupere tallied up five hits on seven at bats, getting a home run, two doubles, two runs and three RBI. Kyle Murphy (4-0) won game one with eight shutout innings, striking out 12, with Eric Yost getting his fourth save with a run in the ninth. Game two starter Sebastian Keane did not get a decision with 6.2 innings, four runs and five strikeouts. Reliever Brian Rodriguez (1-0) got the save with 1.1 innings without a run with Brandon Dufault getting his fourth save with a scoreless ninth.
How It Happened (Game 1):
- After a scoreless inning for both teams to begin, Northeastern scored first in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of two Towson errors to plate a run and lead 1-0.
- Nick Janowicz continued to hold down Northeastern's powerful lineup, but in the bottom of the sixth, back-to-back doubles with two outs led to a run, putting the Huskies up 2-0.
- Kody Reeser pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings as Towson attempted a comeback in the ninth. With one away, Towson notched three consecutive singles, capped by a liner up the middle from Noah Cabrera to score Danny Becerra and put the potential tying run on second base. But Northeastern induced two fly outs and held for the 2-1 victory.
How It Happened (Game 2):
- Towson immediately got going in game two, putting runners on the corners with no outs. Nolan Young put down a safety squeeze for a run. Three batters later with runners on the corners again, Bryce Frederick put a single into center to score Billy Godrick, giving Towson a 2-0 advantage.
- Nick Ramanjulu pitched the first two innings scoreless. Inning three, Northeastern hit an RBI single and sacrifice fly in succession to tie the game at 2-2.
- In the bottom of the fifth, three two-out singles in a row led to the Huskies scoring a run and leading 3-2.
- Towson used some clutch hitting in the top of the seventh to retake the lead. With two outs, back-to-back singles set up first and second. Godrick knocked a single to center to bring in the tying run, then next batter, Young flew a single down the left field line and brought in the go-ahead run. Towson led 4-3.
- The back-and-forth continued in the next half-inning. With two on and one out, Jared Dupere hit a two-run home run to right-center to get Northeastern back ahead 5-4. In the eighth, Northeastern added one on a sacrifice fly, then another on a JP Olsen solo home run, to go into the ninth up 7-4.
- Towson had one last gasp, getting runners on with two outs on back-to-back walks, but Towson could not get closer and fell 7-4.
Inside the Numbers:
- Jake Pecilunas made his 74th career appearance on the mound in game two.
- Nick Janowicz has allowed just two earned runs in his last two starts, combining for 13 innings.
