Men’s Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker in Season Finale

TOWSON, Md. -- It was a tale of two halves for the Towson University men's lacrosse team, which dropped a 12-11 heartbreaker to long-time rival No. 11/No. 13 Drexel University Saturday afternoon at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium.

The Tigers held a 6-2 advantage at halftime, but the Dragons out-scored Towson 10-5 in the second half, including 6-2 in the fourth quarter to take the one-goal win.

Towson (6-8, 3-5 CAA) was led by junior James Avanzato, who posted a five-point day with three goals and two assists. Brody McLean added three points, including a career-best tying two assists. Shane Brennan made 14 saves in the Tigers' Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) regular season finale.

Drexel (8-6, 6-2 CAA) had four points on a hat trick and assist from Jack Mulcahy, which included the game-winning goal with 11 seconds left in regulation. Reid Bowering added a hat trick while netminder Ross Blumenthal turned aside 11 Towson shots.

How it Happened
  • Towson jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the opening stanza as Avanzato potted a man-up goal on a feed from Ryan Swain. Sean Donnelly tied the game at 1-1 for the Dragons as he scored unassisted. Andrew Milani dropped in his 23rd goal of the season with 15 seconds left in the period for a 2-1 Tiger lead.
  • Brody McLean extended Towson's lead to 3-1 two minutes into the second quarter, finishing Avanzato's first helper of the day. Bowering cut the lead back to one four minutes later before Towson went on a three-goal run to cap the first half. Austin Stewart sparked the run on Brody McLean's first assist of the day. Defensive midfielders Reece Potter and Brandon Hund connected in transition, followed by a dunk on the crease from Jake McLean, with Avanzato getting the assist.
  • Drexel opened the second half with back-to-back goals from Aidan Coll and Ryan Genord before Jake McLean and the unrelated Brody McLean connected with 8:50 to play in the third.
  • Over the final 5:41 of the third quarter, each team scored twice, bookended by Drexel goals. Mulcahy scored before Swain and Avanzato went back-to-back for the Tigers. Drexel's final goal of the third was a flukey play; a Brent McVicker would-be pass was deflected and was deemed a goal with 33 seconds left in the third.
  • Drexel scored six goals in the final 12 minutes, limiting Towson to just a pair. Bowering scored two straight at 11:47 and 10:15 before Avanzato logged his final goal of the 2021 season. The Dragons scored another three-goal run from Luke Tomack, Mulcahy and Tomack again for an 11-10 lead.
  • Senior Carson Gaeger came screaming out of the box with 2:58 to play in the fourth, rifling home the game-tying goal. Drexel won the ensuing faceoff, and while both teams had turnovers, the Dragons came away with the ball late. Mulcahy scored the game-winning goal with 11 seconds left on the clock.

Behind the Numbers
  • Drexel out-shot the Tigers 51-42. It was the third time this season a team took at least 50 shots against Towson, coupled with Towson's Feb. 20 game against No. 1 Duke and the season opener on Feb. 6 at No. 5 Virginia.
  • Brennan made 14 saves for Towson, including five in the second quarter and another four in the fourth to give the Tigers a chance. His counterpart made 11 saves, but stopped just two shots in the second half.
  • Ground balls were close as the Dragons picked up 31, followed by 29 from the Tigers. Faceoffs were also nearly an even split, with the Dragons winning 14 and Towson grabbing 13 wins.
  • The Tigers scored once on the man-up, getting three chances. The Tigers allowed two Dragon extra-man goals on three chances.
