Cabrera Grand Slam Sends Towson Baseball into the CAA Tournament

TOWSON, Md. – Noah Cabrera's eighth inning, go-ahead grand slam in game one secured a berth into the 2021 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament for the Towson University baseball team as the Tigers split with Hofstra on Saturday, winning game one 8-5 and falling in game two 6-4.

Towson (20-31, 10-9 CAA) has locked up second place in the CAA North to pick up the berth into the CAA Tournament.  Towson will compete in the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2013.

Down 5-1 in the eighth inning, Towson started to rally vs. Hofstra (16-22, 7-16 CAA) with a Danny Becerra RBI double.  After Towson loaded the bases, Cabrera launched a pitch over the left field fence for the grand slam and a Towson lead.  Burke Camper added a two-run home run for the eventual 8-5 Towson win, securing the CAA Tournament slot.

In game two, a pair of three-run innings in the first and fourth gave Hofstra the advantage.  A ninth inning Beau Blowers two-run home run helped Towson make a final push, but Hofstra held for the win and doubleheader split.

Key Stats:
  • Bryce Frederick hit safely in both games, going 2-for-5 with a triple, two runs and a walk.  Jack McLaughlin also had a hit in each game, finishing 2-for-5 with a double and two runs.  Burke Camper hit his fourth home run of the year, being 2-for-4 in game one, while Noah Cabrera hit his third homer of the season.
  • On the hill, Nick Janowicz did not record a decision in his game one start with 4.1 innings, five runs and seven strikeouts.  Matt Watters (1-1) earned his first career victory in a Towson uniform with 3.2 innings of hitless and scoreless relief, striking out five, with Jake Pecilunas notching his third save with a scoreless ninth.  In game two, starter Nick Ramanjulu (1-5) got the loss, going four innings with six runs, just three earned, and four strikeouts. Nolan Bolt notched a three-inning, scoreless relief outing, having three strikeouts.
  • For Hofstra, Austin Gauthier hit 3-for-9 with a home run, three runs and two RBI.  Each starter recorded decisions: Jimmy Joyce (3-4) fell in game one with six runs and 12 strikeouts in 7.1 innings while Jack Jett (3-4) threw a complete game in the second contest for the win, having four runs and 11 strikeouts.
How It Happened (Game 1):
  • The game started as a pitcher's duel as Nick Janowicz kept Hofstra off the board in the first two frames, including 1-2-3 in the second.
  • Top of the third, Hofstra used four hits and a pair of free passes to plate five and lead 5-0.
  • Towson got on the board in the following inning.  With a man on second and two out, Nolan Young flew a ball down the right field line, landing it in the corner for an RBI double.  Towson trailed 5-1.
  • Towson was held down by Jimmy Joyce until the eighth inning, with Matt Watters keeping the deficit at four.  Drawing first and second with no out, Danny Becerra sent a pitch to left for an RBI double.  Two batters later, Nolan Young walked to put the go-ahead run at the plate.  On a 1-2 count, Noah Cabrera launched a ball over the left field fence for a grand slam, sending the Tigers ahead 6-5.  Towson was not finished, following with a triple by Bryce Frederick over the centerfielder's head.  Next batter, Burke Camper blasted a ball to left for a two-run home run, giving Towson an 8-5 advantage.
  • Jake Pecilunas came into the ninth and got out of the inning in four batters to secure the 8-5 Towson victory.
How It Happened (Game 2):

  • Hofstra got back three runs in the fourth off three extra base hits, all unearned runs, to lead 6-2.
  • Jack Jett held the Tigers without a hit from the fifth to eighth innings.  Towson had one last gasp in it: Beau Blowers came up and hit a two-run home run to straight away center field.  The next batter walked to put the tying run at the plate, but Jett induced a ground out to end the inning.  Hofstra took the win 6-4.
