Towson Baseball Downed in Rainy Series Finale vs. Hofstra

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team had to battle Hofstra and the elements on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Pride 8-5 in the series finale.

Before the game, Towson honored its senior class with a pregame ceremony on the field for Senior Day.  Tigers of the 2020 and 2021 classes were presented with framed jerseys in front of family members.

Towson (20-32, 10-10 CAA) led against Hofstra (17-22, 8-16 CAA) 5-3 before lightning delays stopped the game for 100 minutes.  After resuming the game, Hofstra scored three runs in the top of the fifth and held the lead the rest of the way.

Key Stats:
  • Five of Towson's first six hits were doubles, including one each from the first two batters: Billy Godrick reached base four times off a 2-for-3 day, having a double, run, RBI, walk and hit-by-pitch while Danny Becerra was 2-for-4, also with a double, run, RBI and a walk.
  • Towson starter Danny Madden did not record a decision off four innings, three runs and four strikeouts.  The loss went to Kody Reeser (3-5), who pitched 2.1 innings with four runs, just one earned, and two strikeouts.
  • For Hofstra, Brain Goulard hit two home runs, finishing 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI.  Starter Steven Kaenzig did not get a decision with three runs in 2.1 innings, adding four strikeouts.  The win went to reliever Chris Mott (1-2), who pitched two-and-a-third scoreless with five strikeouts with Mark Faello getting the save, throwing the final 1.2 innings without a run.
How It Happened:
  • Hofstra got off to a fast start in the game, beginning with four consecutive hits and adding an RBI walk later to lead 3-0.
  • Danny Madden settled down and held down Hofstra through the fourth.  Meanwhile, in the bottom of the third, after getting a man on first with one out, three consecutive doubles from Billy Godrick, Nolan Young and Noah Cabrera all brought runs in and tied the game at 3-3.
  • Next inning, Matt Arceo found the left-center gap for a one-out double.  Two batters later, Danny Becerra flew a double to the right-center gap to bring in a run and give Towson the lead.  Following a one hour, 40-minute lightning delay, a wild pitch allowed another run to score, giving Towson the lead 5-3.
  • Hofstra got back the lead in the top of the fifth off back-to-back two-out extra base hits, including a two-run home run by Brian Goulard, to be up 6-5.  Next inning, Hofstra added another off an RBI single, then a solo home run in the seventh, to lead 8-5.
  • Towson tried a final push in the ninth, but fell 8-5.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Following the game, Towson held a ceremony to dedicate the Towson bullpen to Matt Golczewski.  Members of Golczewski's family were on-hand for the dedication.
  • Billy Godrick got hit by a pitch in the first inning for the 21st hit-by-pitch this year, a new Towson single season record.
  • Jake Pecilunas pitched in his 79th career game.  He is five away from the all-time record at Towson.
