Towson Baseball Comes Back in Eighth to Defeat Northeastern

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team, with pitchers Nick Janowicz and Kody Reeser holding one of the top lineups in the country to one run, took the lead in the eighth to defeat Northeastern 2-1 and even the series at home.

Down 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth, Towson (21-33, 11-11 CAA) took the lead at the right time, having a Billy Godrick RBI single and Noah Cabrera RBI fielder's choice to take the lead vs. Northeastern (31-9, 19-3 CAA).  Towson held in the ninth for the victory.

Key Stats:
  • Nick Janowicz had a no-decision on his start, going five scoreless innings with just two hits and striking out four.  Kody Reeser (4-5) finished the game with four innings and no runs charged, striking out five in the win.
  • At the dish, Danny Becerra hit 2-for-3, the lone multi-hit player on both teams.  Billy Godrick was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
  • For Northeastern, Max Viera had the lone extra base hit of the game on a double, going 1-for-4.  Starter Kyle Murphy did not have a decision after going seven shutout innings with nine strikeouts.  Reliever Eric Yost (1-2) got the loss with two runs in the eighth.
How It Happened:
  • The game began as a pitching duel as both sides held the other scoreless in the first five innings.  Nick Janowicz held one of the top hitting teams in college baseball to two hits and struck out four in that span, including two to end innings.
  • Northeastern broke the stalemate in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly to lead 1-0.
  • Towson threatened in the bottom of the sixth with Danny Becerra notching a single up the middle and Billy Godrick being hit by a pitch.  Each advanced one base, but Kyle Murphy pitched out of it with a flyout and strikeout to avoid a run across.
  • With Kody Reeser holding down Northeastern, Towson finally broke through in the bottom of the eighth.  Matt Arceo walked and took second on a sacrifice bunt.  Godrick roped a single to center, scoring Arceo and tying the game.  Nolan Young singled to put runners on the corners.  Noah Cabrera came up and reached on a fielder's choice up the middle, allowing Godrick to score and push Towson ahead 2-1.
  • Reeser continued through the ninth as Northeastern got the bases loaded with two out.  Towson got the final out on a fielder's choice and took the 2-1 victory.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Towson passed the 400-mark for strikeouts pitched for the first time in school history, standing with 401.
