Towson Baseball Downed in Battle vs. Charleston to Open CAA Tournament

WILMINGTON, N.C. – In a back-and-forth affair to kick off the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament, the 5-seed Towson University baseball team pushed 4-seed Charleston to the end but was edged in the ninth in a 6-5 defeat.

Towson (21-35) took the lead with a three-run third inning vs. Charleston (25-23) as the Cougars went back ahead 5-3 after six frames.  A two-run triple by Danny Becerra in the seventh inning tied the game, but Charleston walked off in the ninth for the victory.

With the defeat, Towson will face the loser of Elon/William & Mary tomorrow at 11 a.m.

Key Stats:
  • Danny Becerra had a pair of RBI hits, going 2-for-4 with a double, a run and three RBI from the leadoff spot.  Bryce Frederick also went 2-for-4, scoring a run.
  • Josh Seils did not have a decision in his start, going 5.2 innings with five runs, only one earned, striking out three.  Kody Reeser (4-6) got the loss in relief with 2.1 innings, one run and three strikeouts.
  • For Charleston, Tanner Steffy was 3-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk.  Starter Jordan Carr had a no-decision off three innings and three runs, with the win going to reliever Ty Good (6-5) with 2.1 scoreless innings and a pair of strikeouts.
How It Happened:
  • Charleston struck first in the opening inning with a two-run home run to left by Tanner Steffy to lead 2-0.
  • Towson used the small ball game to get on the board in the top of the third.  Jacob Terao got hit by a pitch, then took second on a sacrifice bunt.  Danny Becerra put a ball back up the middle for an RBI single, scoring Terao.  Following, Billy Godrick and Nolan Young hit back-to-back singles opposite way through the right side, the second scoring Becerra from second.  Next batter, Noah Cabrera brought in a run on a ground out to short to make it 3-2 Towson.
  • Josh Seils pitched through the third and fourth frames 1-2-3 to keep the lead.  Charleston tied the game on an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth, but Seils stranded two runners in scoring position with a strikeout and line out.
  • In a wild bottom of the sixth, Charleston took the lead.  With the bases loaded and one out, a throwing error and an RBI ground out put two runs across as the Cougars led 5-3.
  • Towson responded quickly in the top of the seventh.  With two on and two out, Becerra flared a ball down the right field line and past the diving right fielder, heading into third with a triple and clearing the bases to tie the game at 5-5.
  • Kody Reeser held off the Cougars in the next two innings, but Charleston loaded the bases with two seeing-eye singles and an intentional walk.  A pitch slipped off Reeser's hand and hit the batter to force the run in, giving Charleston the 6-5 victory.
Inside the Numbers:
  • This was Towson's first CAA Tournament game since winning the tournament in 2013.
  • With 146 career strikeouts, Josh Seils is now in the top-10 in program history in that category.
