Becerra Ninth Inning RBI Double Sends Towson Baseball to Victory at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – In another back-and-forth Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) battle, the Towson University baseball team took the lead on a ninth-inning Danny Becerra RBI double for a 6-5 victory at Delaware to open the weekend series.

Towson (16-29, 6-7 CAA) and Delaware (9-18, 5-12 CAA) traded the lead in the early and middle innings, with the teams having a 5-5 tie into the ninth.  Becerra's one-out double scored Nate Mills as the Towson bullpen held for the victory.

The Tigers hold second place in the CAA North and have taken the last four against the Blue Hens.

Key Stats:
  • Jacob Terao was the lone multi-hit player for Towson, going 2-for-3 with a run, RBI and walk, having a game-tying RBI single in the fourth.  Danny Becerra finished 1-for-5 with his RBI double in the ninth while Jake Lysaght was 1-for-4 with a two-run triple in the third.
  • On the mound, Josh Seils got a no decision off six innings, five runs and seven strikeouts.  Cam Clark pitched one-and-two-thirds scoreless in relief, followed by Austin Weber (2-1) with two-thirds of an inning flawless for the victory and Jake Pecilunas with a perfect two-thirds of a frame to pick up his second save of the year.
  • For Delaware, Jack Goan had a two-run home run, hitting 2-for-3 overall.  Starter Chris Ludman went five innings with five runs and a strikeout.  Reliever Mike Biasiello (1-4) had the loss with four innings and six strikeouts, allowing the ninth inning run.
How It Happened:
  • Neither team scored in the opening inning despite a 12-pitch walk for Billy Godrick.  In the top of the second, Bryce Frederick notched a hit up the middle and took second on a heads-up play with no one covering the bag.  On a 0-2 count next batter, Jack McLaughlin hit a single up the middle to score Frederick.  Following a Jacob Terao single to left to have two on, Jake Lysaght found the right-center gap on a line drive, earning a triple and driving in two to send Towson up 3-0.
  • Josh Seils pitched the first two innings scoreless, but in the third, Delaware rallied with two outs on a two-run single by Joseph Carpenter, then a two-run home run by Jack Goan, to lead 4-3.
  • Towson immediately responded in the following half-inning.  With two on and one out, Jacob Terao found the right-center gap on a line drive for an RBI single, tying the game at 4-4.
  • Next inning, Towson got a runner to second with one away.  On a throwing error on a ground ball, Nolan Young came around to score, giving Towson back the lead 5-4.
  • Seils got back in control and threw hitless fourth and fifth frames.  In the bottom of the sixth, Eric Ludman hit a solo home run to even the game up at 5-5.
  • Cam Clark and Austin Weber combined to keep the game scoreless through the eighth.  Jacob Terao walked to reach base then was pinch-run for by Nate Mills.  Mills took second on a throwing error, then third on a wild pitch with one out.  Danny Becerra hit a ball over the centerfielder's head for a double, scoring Mills for a 6-5 Towson lead.
  • Weber got the opening out of the ninth, then Jake Pecilunas shut the door with a ground out and strikeout to finish the game.  Towson took the victory 6-5.
