Year’s Top Scoring Games Lead Towson Baseball to Doubleheader Sweep at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – The Towson University baseball team earned its highest scoring contests of the year on Saturday, leading to a doubleheader sweep at Delaware 12-4 and 12-7 to earn a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) series victory.

Towson (18-29, 8-7 CAA) broke away late in both games at Delaware (9-20, 5-14 CAA), scoring seven unanswered runs in the final four innings of game one to win the first contest.  In game two, following Delaware tying the game with four runs in the eighth, Towson had five straight RBI plate appearances for five runs to earn the win.

With the wins, Towson has won the first three games of the series.  A victory tomorrow would give Towson a series sweep over the Blue Hens.  Towson also has a four-game advantage over Hofstra for second place in the CAA North.

Key Stats:
  • As a team, Towson combined for 23 hits, including seven doubles, and 30 free passes.
  • Noah Cabrera multihit in both contests, going 5-of-10 with a double, four runs, five RBI and two walks.  Nolan Young also had a pair of hits in each game, finishing 4-for-8 with a double, three runs, two RBI and four walks.  Billy Godrick reached base seven times off two hits, three walks and two hit-by-pitches, also having a double and two RBI.
  • On the mound in game one, Nick Janowicz (3-2) got the victory, going five innings with four runs and as many strikeouts.  Throwing after two lightning delays, Kody Reeser picked up his first save of the year with four scoreless innings thrown.  Game two starter Nick Ramanjulu got a no-decision after going 3.2 innings with three runs and two strikeouts.  Following scoreless relief outings by Matt Watters (two innings) and Nolan Bolt (one inning), Jake Pecilunas (4-3) picked up the victory, going one-and-a-third without a run and striking out one.
  • For Delaware, Jake Dunion tallied a 5-for-9 day, hitting a home run and adding four RBI and two runs.  Losses went to relievers Josh Venti (1-2) in game one, with 1.2 innings and a run allowed, and Derek Wakeley (2-2), who surrendered five runs in the ninth inning of game two.
How It Happened (Game 1):
  • Towson was on the board first in the opening inning.  Billy Godrick hit a one-out double, then took third on a ground out.  Noah Cabrera punched a single through the left side to bring in Godrick for a 1-0 Towson lead.
  • Next inning, Bryce Frederick led off with a double, advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt.  Burke Camper lined a ball over the third baseman's head for a single, plating Frederick and sending Towson up 2-0.
  • Delaware took its first lead in the bottom of the second off a pair of RBI hits, including a two-run single by Jake Dunion, to lead 3-2.
  • In the top of the fourth, Towson picked up first and third with one out.  Godrick notched a sacrifice fly to left to score Camper and tie the game at three.
  • Towson continued to get baserunners, and in the fifth, took the lead off back-to-back doubles from Nolan Young and Cabrera in order.  Later, a wild pitch plated another run to send Towson ahead 5-3.
  • Delaware added back a run on a home run to pull within one.
  • In the top of the sixth with a man on first and two out, the game went into a lightning delay.  After play resumed, two walks and a wild pitch allowed a run to score, making the score 6-4 Towson.  Another lightning delay followed, but Kody Reeser entered and notched a 1-2-3 inning to hold the lead.
  • The Tigers broke the game open in the top of the eighth, walking the bases loaded to start the inning.  Javon Fields hit a sacrifice fly for the first run, then two batters later, Jack McLaughlin belted a line drive for a two-run double to right-center.  Camper returned the ball to right-center next batter for another RBI.
  • Towson added more insurance in the ninth: with the bases jammed and one out, Fields got a single to center, bringing home two more as Towson led 12-4.  Reeser held for four-inning save as Towson took the win 12-4.
How It Happened (Game 2):
  • Game two began as a pitcher's duel as Towson starter Nick Ramanjulu did not allow a runner past first in the opening two innings.
  • Towson put two on in the top of the third, but could not score.  Delaware broke the stalemate in the bottom of the third with an RBI single and sacrifice fly to lead 2-0.
  • The Blue Hens added another off a bases-loaded walk in the fourth to be up 3-0.  Towson threatened again in the following half-inning with the bases loaded, but a ground out ended the frame without a run.
  • Towson battled in the top of the sixth to get the bases loaded.  With two out, Jake Lysaght took the first pitch and drove it to the left field wall for a bases clearing double, tying the game at 3-3.
  • The following inning, Nolan Young walked and stole second with two out.  Javon Fields hit a looper over the first baseman for an RBI single, giving Towson the lead 4-3.
  • The bats kept rolling in the top of the seventh, with all runs coming with two out.  With the bases full, Young beat out a ground ball to short for a single and an RBI.  Next batter, Noah Cabrera bounced through the middle for a single, bringing in two and pushing Towson to a 7-3 advantage.
  • Delaware got a couple of big hits in the eighth, a two-run home run by Jake Dunion and a two-run double by Joey Loynd, to tie the game at seven.
  • Facing Delaware's closer, Towson got the bases loaded with one out.  The team's patience paid off as the Tigers drew four consecutive free passes, all pushing home a run.  Fields completed the five-run rally with a sacrifice fly to give Towson a 12-7 lead.  Jake Pecilunas locked down the bottom of the ninth to secure the 12-7 victory.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Towson has won six consecutive games and both 2021 series against Delaware.
  • With a stolen base today, Javon Fields has 39 stolen bases in his Towson career, tying for 10th all-time in program history.
  • Towson's 12 runs in each game stands as the highest score for Towson in a contest this year.  The Tigers previously had 11 runs on April 27 vs. La Salle.  It is the most amount of runs in a game for Towson since defeating Lafayette 13-4 on March 8, 2020.
Next Game:
  • Towson and Delaware are set for getaway day tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Newark.
