NEWARK, Del. – The Towson University baseball team played a close game in search of a sweep at Delaware, but six runs in the eighth inning by the Blue Hens sent the Tigers to a 9-3 defeat.
Towson (18-30, 8-8 CAA) and Delaware (10-20, 6-14 CAA) were tied at three going into the bottom of the eighth. Delaware scored six runs to win and snap Towson's six-game winning streak against the Blue Hens.
Despite the defeat, Towson takes the series win over Delaware with three victories the previous two days.
Key Stats:
- Towson had six hits in the game, all coming from different batters. Burke Camper hit a solo home run in the second inning, concluding the game at 1-for-4, while Javon Fields was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base.
- Towson starting pitcher Danny Madden went six innings in his no-decision, having three runs and six strikeouts. Cam Clark (2-1) pitched a scoreless seventh but was hit with three runs in the eighth for the defeat.
- For Delaware, Joey Loynd brought in three runs, finishing 2-for-3 with a double, a run and a walk. Starter David Mervis did not get a decision off 4.1 innings, three runs and seven strikeouts, while reliever Mike Biasiello (2-5) finished the game for the win, going 4.2 innings with no runs and five strikeouts.
How It Happened:
- Delaware got on the board first with a two-run, two-out single from Joey Loynd for a 2-0 home team lead.
- Towson followed quickly in the next half-inning. With two out and no one on, Burke Camper sent a pitch over the left field fence for a home run, cutting the deficit in half.
- In the third, the Tigers loaded the bases with two out. Noah Cabrera drew a walk to push home Jake Lysaght and tie the game up at two.
- With two on and one out in the top of the fifth, Javon Fields went for a safety squeeze. Nolan Young beat the throw as Towson went ahead 3-2.
- Delaware got the run back in the same inning off a Kyle Baker RBI single, putting the game at a 3-3 tie.
- Towson got a runner to third in hopes of going ahead, but he was stranded. Delaware rallied for six runs in the eighth and took the victory 9-3.
