TOWSON, Md. – Josh Seils earned his first career complete game at the right time as the Towson University baseball team took down Hofstra 4-2 to open the key Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) series at home.
Seils (3-5) went from start to finish for Towson (19-30, 9-8 CAA), striking out seven batters and allowing just six baserunners en route to victory against Hofstra (15-21, 6-15 CAA). The Tigers scored all their runs in the opening three innings and held for the victory.
With the victory, Towson is one win away from locking down a CAA Tournament berth.
Key Stats:
- Seils earned Towson's first complete game since May 4, 2019 by Gavin Weyman at James Madison.
- At the dish, Jake Lysaght hit 2-for-4 from the nine-hole, having a pair of RBI. Jacob Terao went 2-for-4, tallying a double, run and RBI.
- Hofstra hit a pair of solo home runs from Brian Goulard and Aidan Larkin. The loss went to starter John Mikolaicyk (0-5), who had four runs and five strikeouts in 2.2 innings thrown.
How It Happened:
- Following two scoreless innings for Josh Seils, Towson got the bats going in the bottom of the second. Back-to-back singles to begin the inning placed two on base. Two batters later, Jacob Terao blasted a ball past the third baseman for an RBI double, then Jake Lysaght reached on an infield single to short to bring in another. Next batter, Danny Becerra sent a ball to the left-center wall, bring in another to send Towson to a 3-0 lead.
- Hofstra got its first run on a solo home run by Aidan Larkin to make it 3-1 Towson.
- Towson got the run back quickly in the following half-inning. Runners on the corners and two out, Lysaght sent a ground ball back up the middle for a single, scoring Javon Fields as Towson led 4-1.
- Seils pitched out of a potential rally inning for Hofstra in the sixth as the Pride got a walk and a double to put a pair in scoring position. Seils induced a groundout, struck out the next batter then ending the inning with another ground out to finish the frame without a run across and hold the 4-1 Towson lead.
- Hofstra chipped away in the top of the seventh with a Brian Goulard solo home run to make it 4-2. Seils retired the following nine batters in order to earn the 4-2 victory.
Inside the Numbers:
- This is the first nine-inning complete game win for a Towson pitcher since Michael Adams did that feat vs. Hofstra on Apr. 1, 2018, a 1-0 victory for the Tigers.
- Billy Godrick got hit by a pitch in the bottom of the fourth for his 20th hit-by-pitch of the season, tying a Towson single season record. Brendan Butler had 20 hit-by-pitches in 2012.
- Javon Fields has reached base in 25 consecutive games, getting on with a leadoff single in the second. He has also hit safely in the last seven games.
