TOWSON, Md. — The Towson University field hockey team dropped a tough 3-1 decision to Appalachian State on Sunday afternoon.
Towson controlled the pace of the game until the third quarter, as the Mountaineers scored twice to take and keep the lead for the remainder of the game.
The contest served as the Tigers' third season opener of the calendar year as the team started the spring 2021 season against Syracuse and was forced to reschedule Friday's game against Georgetown due to weather after only playing four minutes.
RECORDS
Towson (0-1)
Appalachian State (1-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Tigers kicked off scoring with a goal from Hannah McKeon off a penalty corner just before the eighth minute of play.
- Towson maintained the 1-0 lead until the third period when Appalachian State scored in the 40th minute to knot the score at 1-1.
- The Mountaineers followed up with two quick goals, both off corners, within minutes of each other to secure the 3-1 advantage. Sterre Molkenboer put both scores in.
- App State had three penalty corners in the third in addition to 11 shots.
- Goalkeeper Lena Vandam minimized the damage, coming up with seven huge saves in the span.
- Towson registered two shots in the fourth and Vandam made four saves, but it wasn't enough to secure the come-from-behind victory.
BEYOND THE BOX
- With the win, the Mountaineers are now 5-4 in the all-time series between the two programs.
- Vandam's 12 saves tie her second-highest game total from the spring when she made 12 stops against The Orange. Vandam's high in goal from the spring was 13 saves.
- McKeon's goal against the Mountaineers is her first of the season and of her collegiate career. The junior did score against the Hoyas but the goal does not count until that contest is rescheduled and completed.
- A threat on both sides of the ball, McKeon not only scored the Tigers' loan goal, but also earned her second career defensive save.
- McKeon and Gianna Antone both registered three shots to lead the squad.
- Freshmen Lexi Bove, Haley Palmer and Maddie Dalton all saw time on the pitch in their first collegiate game in addition to transfer Sarah Hatfield, who sported the black & gold in her first contest for the Tigers.
