FARMVILLE, Va. — The Towson University field hockey team was bested by Longwood, 2-0, on Friday night.
The Lancers scored two goals in the second quarter to get ahead and although the Tigers threatened offensively in the second half, they could not rebound from the deficit.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lena Vandam got out to a strong start, making five stops in the first quarter and defending four Longwood penalty corners.
- The Tigers registered two shots in the quarter from Paige Reese and Lexi Bove, respectively.
- The second quarter started quietly with both teams trading possessions. The Lancers broke through first, scoring off a deflection on their fifth penalty corner of the game.
- In the 25th minute, Kasey Bubel came up with a big defensive save to stop another penalty corner.
- The Lancers took the 2-0 advantage with a score from Luna Lopez with under a minute to play in the first half. The goal marked her second of the season.
- The Tigers successfully defended eight penalty corners in the third quarter to deny nine shots. Vandam made six saves in the 15-minute span.
- Towson continued its solid defensive play, stopping several attacks in its zone in the fourth quarter. On the other side of the ball, Georgia Beachley put one shot on goal.
- The black & gold could not find the back of the net however, and Longwood earned its second win of the season.
BEYOND THE BOX
- Freshman Cate Cook started for the Tigers, making her the first freshman to earn the honor so far this season. Differing from last weekend's starters, Elizabeth Harper and Paige Reese were also added to the lineup.
- Lena Vandam made her 11th consecutive start in goal for the Towson. The graduate student made 11 saves, 10 more than her opposition.
- Bubel's defensive save marks her first of the season. The senior made a team-high four stops in the spring.
- The Tigers successfully defended an impressive 14 of the 15 Lancer penalty corners.

Towson will stay in the Commonwealth to face UVA on Sunday, Sept. 5 at noon. The contest will be streamed on the ACC Network.
