Field Hockey Falls Short to Rider in Overtime Battle

TOWSON, Md. — The Towson University Field Hockey team fell short to Rider in a thrilling overtime contest on Sunday afternoon. After ended regulation 2-2, the Broncos found the back of the net seven minutes into the overtime period to take home the 3-2 victory.  

Gianna Antone and Georgia Beachley scored for the Tigers and goalkeeper Lena Vandam made 10 saves in net.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Towson came out on the offensive as Antone scored just under two minutes into the contest. The goal was assisted by Beira Ho.  
  • The Tigers took one other shot in the opening 15:00.  
  • The second quarter was relatively quiet, with both teams exchanging shots and corners.  
  • Vandam ended the first half with three saves, although the goalkeeper did come off her line often to bat away loose balls in the circle.  
  • Rider's adjustments coming out of halftime were spot on, as the team scored two goals within the first four minutes of play. The Broncos secured the 2-1 edge and spent much of the remaining time in the Tigers' zone.  
  • The final quarter started with three shots and a corner from Rider, however, Towson quicky flipped the field and Beachley scored her first goal of the season in the 49th minute. The goal tied the game at 2-2. Antone assisted on the score.  
  • The Tigers defended in their own zone for the rest of the quarter, successfully stopping five penalty corners and 11 shots. Vandam earned a game-high four saves in the span.  
  • After both teams failed to take the advantage at the end of regulation, the game was sent into a 10:00 overtime.  
  • Towson had opportunities early as Hannah McKeon and Antone got shots off early.  
  • In the seventh minute of extra time, Julia Divorra of Rider took advantage as Vandam came off her line, and found the back of the net for her second consecutive score.  

BEYOND THE BOX  

  • Vandam ended the day with 10 saves to extend her streak of double-digit performances to six games.  
  • Antone and Beachley both scored their first goals of the season. Antone and Ho also earned their first assists of the fall. 
  • Paige Reese registered one defensive save for her third consecutive game.  
  • Freshmen Maddie Dalton and Madisyn Howard both saw their first collegiate starts for the Tigers on Sunday.  
  • Out of Towson's nine shots, eight were on goal.  

NEXT GAME  

The Tigers will travel to Philadelphia next weekend to take on La Salle, Friday, Sept. 17 at 3 p.m. and Penn on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 11 a.m.
