Beachley Scores as Field Hockey Defeats LIU, 1-0

TOWSON, Md. — The Towson University field hockey team earned its second win of the season, defeating LIU, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon. Georgia Beachley gave her team the early advantage just before the 10th minute of play to ultimately lock-in the victory.

Goalkeeper Lena Vandam earned her second shutout as a Tiger while collecting two saves in net.

RECORDS

Towson (2-7)

LIU (2-6)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Towson earned the first two penalty corners of the contest, with Beachley converting on the second. Hannah King, the inserter, and Kasey Bubel were credited with assists.
  • The Tigers came out on the offensive, outshooting the Sharks 3-0 in the opening 15:00.
  • LIU created more chances in the second quarter, with an early corner and two resulting shots.
  • Towson got back on track to end the period however, as the team attempted two more corners and four shots.
  • The Tigers and Sharks traded possessions in third quarter in addition to cards. Lydia Miller and Emma Braeckmans were both given yellow cards within five minutes of each other, near the final moments of the half.
  • After playing defense for most of the game, LIU generated some offensive chances in the final quarter. The sharks attempted three consecutive corners to start off, but could not get the ball past the Tiger defense.
  • Braeckmans created a one-on-one opportunity right in front of the net in hopes to find the equalizer, but the play was broken up by Bubel.
  • Towson ended the game with a corner attempt, followed by a shot and LIU answered with their own blocked shot attempt.

BEYOND THE BOX

  • With the win, the black & gold are now 4-1 all-time against LIU after winning consecutive contests in 2016-18.
  • Towson tied their own season-high of six penalty corners which was previously set against Wagner.
  • The Tiger defense successfully stopped four penalty corners in the contest, including three in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
  • Beachley's goal marks her second of the season, after scoring against Rider earlier in the fall.
  • Six unique Tigers registered shots, including Gianna Antone who took three shots and put two on goal. The squad outshot LIU 9-6 and put a total of six shots on goal.
  • Sunday's contest marks the first time this season that Towson has led the opposition in shots, shots on goal and penalty corners.
  • Both of Vandam's two saves came in the second quarter, as the Towson defense did an exceptional job of keeping LIU attackers at bay in the second half.
  • Eight cards were given out during the contest, including one bench green card and one yellow card, per team.

NEXT GAME

Next weekend, Towson will hit the road for its first conference matchups of the season. The team will head back to Philadelphia to face Drexel on Oct. 1 at 4 p.m. before going to No. 23 Delaware Oct. 3 for a noon game.
