Resilient Tigers Complete Weekend Sweep of UNCW

TOWSON, Md. -- Pushed into its sixth-different starting lineup this fall, the Towson University women's volleyball continued its resiliency with a 3-0 sweep of visiting UNCW Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers (15-1, 3-1 CAA) grabbed their third-straight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) win, backed by a nine-kill effort from Irbe Lazda, who made her first career start for the Tigers. Towson controlled the action 25-12, 25-22, 25-12 well, particularly in the first and third sets.

Emily Jarome led Towson's hitting efforts with six kills on 11 swings, hitting for .545 thanks to a zero-error performance. Lazda and Fay Bakodimou turned in team-highs with nine kills apiece. The Tigers hit for .330 in the match, their best hitting percentage in league play this fall. Towson limited UNCW to a .089 thanks to eight total blocks. Towson's servers dropped in nine aces, including six from the hand of Bakodimou.

UNCW (1-13, 0-2 CAA) had a match-best 12 kills from Katie Lanz, while Alexa Brezeault added five. Quinn Manley posted 15 digs for the match second-best behind 19 from Towson's Rachel Hess. The Seahawks managed just two service aces in the three-set match.

How it Happened
  • Looking to capitalize on a tight three-setter on Saturday, UNCW jumped out to a 5-2 lead before the Tigers settled in. Down 6-3, Towson ripped off an 10-0 run, which featured three-straight aces from Bakodimou, helping the Tigers to a 13-6 lead.
  • The Seahawks snapped the run with a 3-0 surge of their own to make it 13-9 but another run from the Tigers, this time a 9-2 push, doubled up the visitors with a 22-11 lead.
  • UNCW could not score a point on its own efforts, getting one last tally on a Towson service error before the Tigers slammed home the set win with a 3-0 run, deciding the first 25-12.
  • The Tigers continued the hot start with a 5-1 jump in the second set, but the Seahawks fought back to a 9-9 tie, eventually taking a 12-1 advantage.
  • Towson tied the set 12-12 on a Lazda kill, but the Seahawks connected a 3-0 run, part of a 5-1 effort, to grab a 15-12 lead.
  • The Tigers stayed within striking distance, however, trailing 19-15 but that gap was short lived as Towson surged into a 21-19 lead with a 6-0 run. The unrelated Megan Wilson and Morgan Wilson featured heavily in the run, combining for three kills, including a Megan assist to Morgan kill.
  • UNCW had a chance, getting it back to a one-point set at 22-21 Towson, but another 3-1 burst from the Tigers sealed the second frame 25-22.
  • Set three had a similar start for the Tigers, who jumped up quickly at 7-3. UNCW cut the lead down to 7-4, but Towson rattled off eight unanswered points for a 15-4 advantage.
  • The Black and Gold wave continued as the Tigers eventually took a 21-6 lead with another 5-1 run, with another ace from Bakodimou, who added a kill, while Jarome and Wiers chipped in a block.
  • For the first time in the third set, UNCW connected points, going for a 3-0 run to trim Towson's lead down to 21-9. With room to work, Towson finished the match splitting the final seven points with UNCW for the 25-12 decision.
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson held UNCW in the negative for two of the three sets, including a -.061 in the final frame. The Tigers were just shy of three blocks a set, finishing with eight in the match with six different Tigers getting in on the block. Wiers had a team-best five assisted stops while Bakodimou and Nikiya Mitchell finished with three apiece.
  • Rachel Hess had a 19-dig effort, while adding three assists for good measure. Kristin Spengler led the Tigers with 17, followed by 10 helpers from Megan Wilson
  • Towson did not finish with a double-digit killer, led by nine each from Lada and Bakodimou, but eight different Tigers registered multiple kills.
  • One of the top service ace teams in the country, the Tigers finished with nine, including six from Bakodimou, two better than her previous career best.
  • The Tigers extended their winning streak over the Seahawks to 10 in a row. The back-to-back sweeps mark the first time since the 2006 season the Tigers have picked up two sweeps over the Seahawks in the same season. It marks the first time since 2010-12 the Tigers have consecutive sweeps over UNCW, winning three straight in that three-year stretch.
  • Towson now has 24 straight wins at SECU Arena, the longest-active home winning streak in Division I.
Up Next for Towson
  • The Tigers are midway through a four-match home stand, bringing in Elon next weekend.
  • The Phoenix (9-5, 4-0 CAA) are coming to SECU Arena after picking up two wins over Delaware in five and three sets this weekend.
