Record Effort Leads Towson to Five-Set Victory

TOWSON, Md. -- Heart rates were high in the fifth set as the Towson University women's volleyball team picked up a huge 3-2 win over longtime rival Loyola University Maryland Friday night at SECU Arena.

Towson (6-0) picked up its second five-set win of the season with another come-from-behind win over another Patriot League foe, going 25-16, 20-25, 18-25, 19-25, 16-14.

Junior libero Rachel Hess had a huge night, going for 35 digs in the match. Nina Cajic batted down 15 kills at a .375 percent clip, while scoring two service aces. Her second ace of the match came in the fifth set, coming out of a Loyola timeout late in the set. Lydia Wiers added 10 kills and 10 blocks for a double-double. Wiers led the way at the net as Towson combined for 21 blocks in the match.

Loyola (3-2) had a double-double from setter Kacy Sekunda, who put up 27 assists and 19 digs. Abby Hamilton led the match, who went 1-1 on the day with a sweep of Princeton, with 17 kills on 71 swings.

How it Happened
  • The home-standing Tigers jumped up to a fast lead in the match, going up 25-16 in the first set, which featured just two ties and no score changes. Wiers knocked down six kills in the set while Fay Bakodimou notched two service aces.
  • Loyola deadlocked the match at 1-1 after taking a 25-20 set win. Hamilton put away five kills on 16 swings alongside four aces. Corinne Filograna had a busy set in the backcourt with five digs.
  • The Greyhounds controlled the third set throughout, working up to the 25-18 set win to take a 2-1 lead in the match, pushing past five ties and a pair of lead changes. Hamilton dropped in another six kills with six digs herself to lead Loyola. 
  • Backs against the wall, Towson responded in the fourth set with a 25-19 win. The Tigers featured a balanced offense in the set with Jarome leading with four kills while Cajic and Bakodimou turned in three and two kills, respectively. Hess contributed seven digs in the set to keep Towson's hopes alive heading into the fifth.
  • Set five was a wild, back and forth frame with seven ties and four lead changes. Ice in her veins, Cajic led Towson with four kills and the crucial service ace. Wiers bounced back with another two kills en route to the 16-14 set and match win.
Behind the Numbers
  • Despite going five sets, Towson held Loyola's offense in check, holding the Greyhounds to a .090 hitting efficiency. Towson put up 21 blocks, a program record for a single match, eclipsing the previous best of 19 set against Georgetown during the 2005 campaign.
  • Wiers contributed 11 total blocks, tied for the third-most by a Tiger in a single match 
  • Friday's five-set thriller was the first between the Tigers and Greyhounds in the 25-point rally scoring era; the last five set match came back during the 2001 campaign at the Greyhounds home gym.
  • Towson has now won back-to-back matches against the Greyhounds. .
  • The Tigers ran their winning streak out to 30 dating back to mid-September 2019.
  • Towson won its 70th match all-time at SECU Arena.
