Late Set Rallies Lead Towson to Sweep

TOWSON, Md. -- It's first to 25, not 20, and the Towson University women's volleyball team understood that as the home-standing Tigers picked up a three-set win over visiting Princeton University Saturday afternoon at SECU Arena.

Towson (7-0) bounced back in the second and third sets, trailing 20-15 and 20-17, respectively, before grabbing set wins for the sweep.

The Black & Gold Tigers got a big double-double effort from Fay Bakodimou with 13 kills and 12 digs, alongside four service aces. Libero Rachel Hess seemingly tracked down every ball in the gym, coming up with 13 digs while Kristin Spengler and Megan Wilson had 20 and 12 assists apiece. Towson was pushed to start Morgan Wilson just before first serve, which allowed the junior to overcome a slow start for 11 kills on 23 swings.

Princeton (1-2) was led by 17 kills from Avery Luoma while Lindsey Kelly notched 34 assists. The Orange and Black Tigers hit at a .217 rate as well.

  • From there, Towson did not allow the visitors consecutive points, finishing the set with a 10-3 run, including a 6-1 flourish to go up two sets to none with a 25-23 set win. Towson finished the set with a bang on a Cajic and Wiers block.
  • The third set was another tight effort throughout with 10 ties and four lead changes. Towson had a 4-1 run to hold a narrow 14-13 edge before Princeton strung together a 4-1 run of its own to take a 17-15 advantage.
  • Another 4-1 run for Princeton put it within striking distance of a set win, 21-18, but Towson pounded down a 7-0 run to remain unblemished on the season with a 25-21 set win.
