Tigers Wrap Towson Invitational With Local Sweep

TOWSON, Md. -- Another four matches in the books for the Towson University women's volleyball team and another four wins as the Tigers wrapped up the Towson Invitational Sunday afternoon against Morgan State.

Towson (8-0) improved to 4-0 at SECU Arena with the three-set (25-6, 25-14, 25-19) win, while taking its record against in-state opponents this season to a similar mark.

Tiger libero Rachel Hess was named as the Most Outstanding Player for the Invitational, while Lydia Wiers and Nina Cajic were selected to the All-Tournament Team. Stony Brook had Enitan Omolewa and Leoni Kunz selected while Abby Hamilton (Loyola), Kendall Hoges (Morgan State) and Avery Luoma (Princeton) were also All-Tournament selections.

Cajic was Towson's top threat all afternoon, hitting for .846 on the day with 11 kills on 13 swings alongside zero errors. The Subotica, Serbia product hit at an .846 percent clip, the highest percentage in a match for a CAA team this season. She is the first player in the league to go north of 80 percent for a match since Towson's own Jocelyn Kuilan went .833 (15-0-18) against Xavier at the Puerto Rico Clasico on Sept. 2, 2018.

Sara Wasiakowska had a career outing for Towson, putting away eight kills on 14 swings with just one error. Morgan Wilson added another eight kills at a .353 rate. Kristin Spengler and Megan Wilson ran the offense with 19 and 15 assists, respectively.

Morgan State (0-8) was paced by six kills from Justyus Jackson and five more from Makila Billingsley. Jadore Hayes tracked down nine digs as Mackenzie Jefferson and Trinity Caruthers had nine and seven assists, respectively.

How it Happened
  • Set one was all Towson early as the Tigers quickly opened a 5-0 lead before Morgan State scored two of the next three points for a 6-2 Towson lead. From there, Towson put away 11-straight points with kills from Wiers, Wasiakowska and Fay Bakodimou, paired with several blocks.
  • The Tigers held Morgan State from consecutive points in the opening frame, tucking away a 4-1 run to finish the set and take a 1-0 lead in the match. Cajic had a pair of kills in the small run while Aayinde Smith added one as well.
  • Morgan State took a 2-0 lead in the second set before another long Tiger run put the hosts up 6-2. The Bears cut Towson's lead down to 9-8 with a 3-0 run and stayed within five points of Towson's lead until a 7-1 lead built the Tiger advantage to 19-11.
  • Like the first set, Towson finished the second with a quick run, this time 5-1, including kills to finish the frame from Cajic and Wasiakowska.
  • Opening the third set, Morgan State put up a 6-4 lead on the board before the Tigers deadlocked things at 7-7 and 8-8 thanks to a Bakodimou kill. The set was tied one final time at 13 apiece before the Tigers put in some distance with a 4-0 burst, with Wasiakowska accounting for two points in the run.
  • The Bears threatened again at 18-16 for the Tigers but Towson's stout defense held off a would-be rally and disallowed connecting points. Towson finished the match with a 7-3 run, getting kills from Morgan Wilson and Wiers to finish the weekend unblemished.
Behind the Numbers
  • Cajic led the day with an .846 hitting percentage, scoring 11 kills on 13 swings with zero errors. She is the fourth CAA player in the last six seasons to hit above .800 in a match. • Wasiakowska hit a career-best eight kills at a .500 rate, accounting for just one attack error. She added three assisted blocks to her line as well.
  • Towson split time at setter between Spengler (19) and Megan Wilson (15). Towson Invitational Most Outstanding Player Rachel Hess finished with eight digs on the day paired with three service aces.
