Towson Men’s Basketball Dominates William & Mary for Fourth Straight Victory

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Towson University men's basketball team put together its best offensive performance of the season on Monday night, taking down William & Mary 91-69 on the road for its fourth straight victory.
 
Towson (13-5, 3-1 CAA) never trailed against William & Mary (3-14, 2-2 CAA) en route to the 22-point victory, leading by as much as 28 at one point in the game.
 
With this win, Towson has its first-ever 13-5 start in Division I history.  Towson has also earned its first four-game winning streak of the season.
 
Key Stats:
  • Towson led in nearly every facet of the game, shooting 54.8% from the field with 34 field goals, each mark a season-best, and outrebounding W&M 38-32.  Five different Tigers scored in double digits in the game.
  • Jason Gibson led the way on scoring with 22 points, including going 6-for-11 from three-point range.  Cam Holden notched his eighth double-double of the season on 15 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Nicolas Timberlake netted 17 points in the game while Antonio Rizzuto had 15 and Chase Paar had a season-high 11, adding six boards and three blocks.
  • For W&M, Brandon Carroll was the leading scorer with 14 points, adding six rebounds.  Ben Wight finished with 13 points off 6-for-10 from the field.
How It Happened:
  • Towson came out firing in the early going, hitting its first pair of threes from the right corner off catch-and-shoots.  Antonio Rizzuto made his while fouled in the corner, hitting his free throw to begin Towson on a 9-0 run two minutes in.
  • W&M stopped the run with a three-pointer of its own, then Chase Paar got hacked going to the basket hitting subsequent free throws.  Ben Wight started to get W&M back into the game with drives to the basket, pulling the home team within two at 13-11 at the 13:39 mark.
  • Towson first attacked in the paint to get back in control with driving layups from Charles Thompson and Juwan Gray.  Then, kick outs to Jason Gibson led to back-to-back threes, then Cam Holden powered his way to a pair of baskets to complete a 14-0 run and send Towson to a 27-11 advantage, 9:20 left in the 1st.
  • Connor Kochera and Wight hit back-to-back shots to break Towson's run, but the Tigers' aggressive play kept W&M's defense on its heels.  Paar scored again while hacked on a layup, then Holden ripped away a rebound and scored a putback to push Towson up 32-16 with just over seven minutes left in the 1st.
  • For the next couple of minutes, the teams kept exchanging baskets as Gibson kept knocking down long threes to keep fueling Towson's lead.  His fifth three-point make at the 5:29 mark send the Tigers to a 38-22 advantage.
  • After W&M scored to bring the home team within single digits to start the second half, Towson's perimeter shooting kept going as Gibson and Rizzuto knocked down outside shots.  Following a W&M layup, Towson had three consecutive makes close range to go up 19 at 59-40 with 14:44 to play.
  • The teams kept exchanging baskets in the up-and-down contest as power in the paint from Thompson and Holden kept Towson's lead strong.  A layup against three defenders for Thompson pushed Towson advantage to 22 at 71-49 with 9:42 remaining.
  • Towson never let up as a personal 4-0 run for Rizzuto got the Tigers to lead by as much as 28 with 3:22 left.  Several of Towson's reserves got into the game, including Brandon Held and Olugbemi Joseph entering for the first time in a Towson uniform, as the Tigers took a 91-69 victory.
Inside the Numbers
  • Towson scored 47 points in the first half, the most in a half this season.
  • Towson's 91 points is the most in a game this year, surpassing the 89 scored at Coppin State on Dec. 11.  It is the most points scored against a Division I opponent since Towson's 92-77 victory vs. Drexel on Feb. 16, 2019.  Towson's 34 field goals made was the most against a DI opponent since that same Drexel game, when the Tigers had 36.
  • This is the fourth game this season where five different Tigers scored in double digits.  The last time was on Jan. 9 in Towson's victory vs. Northeastern.
  • Towson's 28-point lead was just four points shy of its largest lead of the season, having led Penn by 32 points with 6:52 remaining in the 2nd half on Nov. 23.
  • Jason Gibson has hit 14 three-point field goals in his last two games played.  He has combined for 48 points in those two games.
  • Cam Holden has a double-double in two of his last three games.  He notched his eighth double-double, nine double-figure rebounding game and 14th double figure scoring game of the season.
  • Chase Paar picks up his first double-figure scoring game as a Tiger.  His last one came while with GW on Dec. 14, 2020.
  • 15 players got into the game for Towson, including the first-ever appearances for Brandon Held and Olugbemi Joseph.
