Volleyball Wins Hard-Fought Match to Tie Program Record for Best Start to a Season

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University volleyball team faced the North Carolina A&T Aggies on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers (16-0, 6-0 CAA) battled against the Aggies (4-12, 0-6 CAA) in a four-set match 25-19, 25-27, 25-22, 25-22.
 
Key Stats vs North Carolina A&T:
  • Towson totaled nine service aces for the third consecutive match and fourth time this year.
  • The Tigers had 14 blocks compared to only six for North Carolina A&T.
  • Towson registered 49 kills for the third time in the last five matches.
  • Towson held the Pirates to a .152 hit percentage this afternoon, including a 0 percentage in the fourth set.
 
How It Happened vs North Carolina A&T:
  • The Tigers opened the first set with a 10-4 run that included five straight points and three aces from three different players. The Aggies countered with five straight points to cut the lead down to one.
  • The teams went back-and-forth trading points until Towson had a 5-1 run that four different players registered a kill to take a 17-12 lead. The Tigers maintained a strong lead and won the first set 25-19 on Victoria Barrett's ace, which was Towson's fourth ace of the set.
  • The second set started with Towson taking a 6-3 lead, then the Aggies went on a 6-2 run to take their first lead of the match at 9-8. The Tigers were able to regain the lead, but North Carolina A&T responded with a 7-2 run to have an 18-14 lead.
  • The Aggies were able to stretch their lead up to six points, but Towson would not give up easily and scored six consecutive points to tie the score at 22. The teams traded points and were tied at 25, but North Carolina A&T was able to win the set 27-25.
  • The Aggies opened the third set with an 8-2 lead, but the Tigers countered with ten unanswered points that included three kills from Fay Bakodimou to have a 12-8 lead.
  • North Carolina A&T responded with a 7-1 run to regain a 15-13 lead. The Aggies held on to the lead until Towson went on a 8-2 run to win the third set 25-22.
  • Towson started the fourth set with a 7-2 run highlighted by Rachel Hess's service ace. The Aggies were able to chip away at the lead and reduce the deficit to one, but the Tigers were able to score three unanswered to have a 13-9 lead.
  • Towson was able to hold on to their lead until North Carolina A&T went on a 6-2 run to tie the score at 20. The Tigers countered with a 5-2 run, with Nina Cajic having two crucial kills to win the fourth set 25-19 and seal the victory for Towson.
 
Inside the Numbers vs North Carolina A&T:
  • Towson totaled double-digit blocks for the fifth time this year and the second straight match. Six players registered a block this afternoon.
  • Nina Cajic had a career-high nine total blocks, and Lydia Wiers had a season-high nine blocks.
  • Five Tigers had seven or more kills today with Cajic having a team-high 13. Cajic has totaled double-digit kills in four of her last five matches.
  • Aayinde Smith had a career-high eight kills this match on .375 hit percentage and added five total blocks with one dig.
  • Fay Bakodimou surpassed 500 kills this afternoon, with seven kills today. Bakodimou added six digs, two aces and one block assist.
  • Sarah Jordan tied a career-high in assists with 26 and has had 20 or more assists in four of her last five matches. Jordan had one ace to extend her service ace streak to ten straight matches. The freshman from Leesburg, Virginia had nine digs for the fourth time this season.
  • Rachel Hess had 14 digs and has registered double-digit digs in eight of her last nine matches. Hess had three aces to tie a season-high and have seven consecutive matches with an ace.
  • Towson improves to 16-0 for the second time in program history and had their consecutive set streak snapped at 11.

Towson will travel to Newark, Del. to face the Delaware Blue Hens on Oct. 8-9 at 2:00 p.m.
