TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University volleyball team faced off against the Delaware Blue Hens on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers (17-0, 7-0 CAA) swept the Blue Hens (10-5, 6-1 CAA) 26-24, 25-16, 25-18 to have the best-ever start to a season in program history.
Key Stats vs Delaware:
- Towson totaled nine blocks for the second time this season.
- The Tigers held the Blue Hens to their lowest hit percentage of the season at -0.19 and held them below zero in two of the three.
- Towson had double-digit kills in every set, including 16 kills in the final set.
- The Tigers have totaled 40 or more kills in 15 of the 17 matches.
How It Happened vs Delaware:
- Towson jumped out to a 7-2 run, but Delaware responded with five straight points to tie the score at seven. The teams traded points twice, then the Tigers score four unanswered points with two kills from Fay Bakodimou to have a 13-9 lead.
- The Blue Hens tied the game at 13 after scoring four straight points. Towson regained the lead after a 5-2 run to take an 18-15 lead. The teams went back and forth until Delaware tied the game at 24. Towson was able to score consecutive points on an attack error and a Nina Cajic kill to win the first set 26-24.
- The Tigers opened the second set with an 8-4 lead. After giving up two points to the Blue Hens, Towson went on an 8-1 run to take control of the set and go up 16-7.
- Delaware was able to cut their deficit down to five after a 7-3 run, but the Tigers were able to close out the set with a 6-2 run to take the second set 25-16.
- Towson started the final set with an 8-2 run that included kills from six different players. The teams went back and forth until the Blue Hens cut their deficit to three.
- They exchanged points until the Tigers closed out the third set with a 7-3 run that was capped off by a Victoria Barrett kill to take the set 25-18.
Inside the Numbers vs Delaware:
- Six Tigers had four or more kills. Nina Cajic and Fay Bakodimou each had eight kills to lead Towson.
- Bakodimou had two service aces and six digs for the second straight match.
- Four Tigers registered two or more total blocks, with Aayinde Smith and Irbe Lazda having four total blocks. Victoria Barrett added two solo blocks and a team-high 13 digs.
- Sarah Jordan had a team-high 16 assists, while Katie McCracken had 14 assists.
- The Tigers held reigning CAA Offensive Player of the Week Lani Mason to a season-low -0.053 hit percentage and ten kills.
- Towson earned their 13th sweep of the season and sixth sweep in CAA play.
- The Tigers improve to 17-0 on the season for the first time ever.
