TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University volleyball team squared off against the William & Mary Tribe at SECU Arena. The Tigers (22-1, 11-1 CAA) come away with another four-set victory against the Tribe (11-9, 6-6 CAA) 25-17, 20-25, 25-16, 25-23.
Key Stats vs William & Mary:
- Towson held the Tribe to a .136 hit percentage, including a 0.057 percentage in the first set.
- The Tigers finished with 60 kills to have their second-highest total of the season.
- The Tigers registered 11.5 blocks and have totaled double-digit blocks in five consecutive matches.
- Towson had 63 digs compared to only 39 by the Tribe.
- The Tigers totaled 56 assists to have three straight matches of 50 or more assists.
How It Happened vs William & Mary:
- Towson jumped out to a 9-5 lead, with three Tigers registering two kills each. The teams went back and forth until the Tigers went on a 5-1 run to get some breathing space with a 15-9 lead.
- Towson held on to a consistent lead, with Aayinde Smith sealing a 25-17 set victory with the final two points for the Tigers.
- William & Mary started the second set with a 9-3 run, but the Tigers responded with an 8-2 run to tie the score at 11. The teams went back and forth, tying the score five times until the Tribe ended the set with an 8-3 run to tie the match at one
- The Tribe opened the third set with a 5-1 run, but Towson countered with their own 5-1 run to tie the score at six. William & Mary gained a 9-7 lead, but the Tigers scored seven unanswered points to have a 15-10 advantage.
- The Tribe cut the deficit to 16-14, but five consecutive points gave the Tigers a 21-14 lead. Towson closed out the set with Fay Bakodimou getting back-to-back service aces to win the set 25-16.
- Towson got a 7-4 lead to start the fourth set. The Tribe cut the lead down to one five times, but the Tigers were able to hold on. Towson opened up a 17-11 lead after a 6-1 run gave the Tigers control of the set.
- Towson continued to hold on to the lead and managed to get to 24-20, but The Tribe scored three straight points to cut the lead back to one. The Tigers prevailed on an attack error by William & Mary to clinch the fourth set 25-23 and win their 22nd match.
Inside the Numbers vs William & Mary:
- Irbe Lazda tied a career-high 17 kills this afternoon on a .367 hit percentage to lead the offense.
- Fay Bakodimou registered ten kills and a season-high four aces. Bakodimou has had double-digit kills in three of her last four matches.
- Katie McCracken had a career-best 30 assists and ten digs to register her third double-double of the season.
- Sarah Jordan also had a double-double with 20 assists and ten digs. This is the first time both setters had double-doubles this season in a match.
- Lydia Wiers led the Tigers with six total blocks. Wiers also had eight kills on a team-best .889 hit percentage.
- Aayinde Smith totaled ten kills on a .444 hit percentage and added five total blocks.
- Towson remains perfect at SECU Arena with 11 wins and picked up their 11th CAA win this year.
