TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University volleyball team faced off against the Charleston Cougars on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers (23-1, 12-1 CAA) defeated the Cougars (12-14, 7-6 CAA) in four sets, 25-19, 23-25, 25-22, 25-20.
Key Stats vs Charleston:
- The Tigers totaled nine aces for the sixth time this year.
- Towson finished with nine total blocks.
- The Tigers registered 54 assists to have 50 or more assists for the fourth straight match.
- Towson had 58 kills this afternoon, including double-digit kills in every set.
How It Happened vs Charleston:
- The Tigers started the match on an 8-2 run with aces from Sarah Jordan and Rachel Hess. Charleston started to chip away at the lead and reduced their deficit to four, but Towson responded with a 6-2 run to have a 20-12 lead.
- The lead remained at eight, but the Cougars scored four unanswered to make the score 23-19. Towson scored the final two points to secure the first set 25-19.
- The Tigers were able to gain a small lead to open the second set, but Charleston went on a 5-2 run to have a 10-9 lead. Towson countered with a 4-1 run to take a 13-11 lead, then the Cougars went on an 8-1 run to earn a 19-14 lead.
- Both teams went back and forth with Towson trailing 23-17 but the Tiger scored five straight points to trail by only one to the Cougars. Charleston scored two of the last three points to win the set 25-23 and tie the match at one.
- The third set started with Towson jumping out to a 7-4 lead. The teams went back and forth with the Cougars cutting the lead down to one, but The Tigers went on a 4-1 run to create breathing space.
- Charleston responded with five consecutive points to have a 16-15 lead. The teams went and back exchanging points with the Cougars leading 22-21, but Towson scored four unanswered points behind Fay Bakodimou's two kills to take the fourth set 25-22.
- The Tigers gained a 9-6 lead to start the fourth set, but Charleston responded with a 6-2 run to take a 12-11 lead. The teams went back and forth until Towson scored three straight points to have a 17-14 lead.
- Charleston cut the deficit to one, but Towson again responded with a 4-1 run to take a 21-17 lead. The Cougars scored back-to-back points, but the Tigers sealed the win with another 4-1 run to win the final set 25-20.
Inside the Numbers vs Charleston:
- Victoria Barrett led the way with a season-high 16 kills on .361 hit percentage and ten digs to have her third double-double this season.
- Fay Bakodimou got her second double-double of the year with 14 kills on .321 hit percentage and 12 digs. Bakodimou added two aces and three blocks.
- Irbe Lazda extended her streak to four matches with double-digit kills, finishing with ten kills this afternoon.
- Sarah Jordan finished with a team-best 25 assists to surpass 500 assists on the season. Jordan had two aces for the third time in the last four matches and added four digs.
- Aayinde Smith totaled five total blocks, a team-best, and five kills.
- Katie McCracken tallied 23 assists, five digs and tied a career-high in service aces with three aces.
- Rachel Hess had a team-high 20 digs and four assists.
