TOWSON, Md. – Towson University swimmers
Michael Fazio and
Brian Benzing will represent the Tigers' swimming and diving program at the 2022 Toyota U.S. Open in Greensboro, N.C. starting Wednesday. Fazio and Benzing will both compete in the 50 free on Thursday, Dec. 1. Benzing will also swim in the 100 breast and 100 fly on Friday, Dec. 2.
Fazio qualified for the 50 free with a time of 20.03 at the Patriot Invitational earlier this month, which is the fastest time in the CAA this season and more than two-tenths of a second ahead of the nearest non-Towson swimmer.
Benzing qualified for the 50 free with a time of 20.07 as the relay leadoff in the 200 free relay at the same meet. That time marks the second-fastest 50 free in the CAA this season, behind only Fazio.
Benzing swam the 100 breast for the first time at the Patriot Invitational, winning the event with a finals time of 52.37. That time currently marks the 19
th-fastest time in Division I and is the second-fastest time in Towson history behind his time of 51.47 in the preliminary heats of the NCAA Championships last season. It currently stands as the second-fastest time in the CAA this season.
The junior also qualified in the 100 fly with a time of 47.14 in Fairfax a few weeks ago. That time is the fastest time in the CAA this season and the second-fastest in Towson program history.
