Shinnick Announces News on Coaching Staff

TOWSON, Md. – Towson University head coach Pete Shinnick is continuing to fill out his football staff for his upcoming first season in 2023.

Shinnick has announced that Alex Kolt and Tyson Wachenheim will join Towson as assistant coaches.  In addition, Almondo Curry will remain on as an assistant coach plus Britton Myers, announced to the staff earlier this week, will add the role of recruiting coordinator.

Earlier this week, Shinnick announced the additions of Darian Dulin (defensive coordinator/defensive backs), Alex Krutsch (special teams coordinator/outside linebackers), Brian Sheppard (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks) and Britton Myers (inside linebackers/recruiting coordinator).

Almondo Curry – Cornerbacks
Curry will remain with the Towson coaching staff, entering his third year with the Tigers in 2023.  He will continue to work with the cornerbacks.

This past year, cornerback Robert Javier was first in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in pass break-ups and second in total passes defended to be named Phil Steele All-CAA Second Team.

An All-ACC player at Virginia and former three-year Canadian Football League professional, Curry came to Towson from Maryville College, also having stops at William & Mary, Virginia State, Christopher Newport, Heritage H.S. and Hampton H.S.  He graduated from Virginia in 2004.

Alex Kolt – Offensive Line
A DMV native from Arlington, Virginia, and longtime assistant at nearby Georgetown, Kolt will work with the offensive line.  Kolt has been with the Hoyas since 2011.

While with Georgetown, he has coached 13 all-conference players, including two All-Patriot League offensive linemen this past season, working with offensive line, defensive line and tight ends in his career.

Kolt also has a year of experience as an offensive line coach at JR Tucker H.S.  He graduated from Hampden-Sydney in 2010 after playing offensive line for four years, earning his Master's Degree from VCU in 2011.

Tyson Wachenheim – Tight Ends
Wachenheim comes to Towson as the tight ends coach after serving in the same role at Belhaven last year.  He previously was a graduate assistant at Indiana and Georgia Tech.

In 2022, Wachenheim's tight end group helped block for a Belhaven team which averaged 287 rushing yards a game, ranking fourth in NCAA DIII.  The unit also finished with two of the top-five players in receptions with the pair combining for 21 catches for 301 yards and four touchdowns.

Before his time at Indiana and Georgia Tech, Wachenheim was the tight ends coach at VMI from 2015-16.  He graduated from Christopher Newport in 2015 after four years playing tight end, earning a Master's Degree from Georgia Tech in 2019.
