Team Effort Helps Men’s Lacrosse Run Past The Mount

TOWSON, Md. – With two hat tricks and two five-point games, the Towson University men's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season, topping visiting Mount St. Mary's 13-8 Tuesday afternoon at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium.

Towson (1-1) got a second-straight five-point game from James Avanzato (3g, 2a) while Kyle Berkeley contributed five points, including a career-best four assists. The Tigers got a dozen saves in net from Shane Brennan while limiting the Mountaineers to just 17 clears on 25 chances.

Mount St. Mary's (1-2) was led by two goals from Steven Schmitt. Kyle Cullen added three helpers for the visiting side while Noah Daniels had three points with one goal and two assists. Connor Beals won 15 of the 25 faceoffs while Griffin McGinley stopped 15 Towson shots.

How it Happened
  • Playing its second game in four days, the Tigers fell behind 1-0 in the first 14 seconds of the game. Nick DeMaio tied the game with 8:26 to go in the opening period on a feed from Ryan Swain.
  • The Mountaineers took a two-goal, 3-1 lead with strikes from Brendan Lantieri and Beals off the ensuing faceoff at 2:08 and 1:54, respectively. The Tigers pulled back within one with 31 seconds to go in the quarter as Avanzato and Berkeley connected.
  • Towson wrested control of momentum, extending its scoring run to four. DeMaio got things going in the first minute of the fresh stanza with fellow transfer Berkeley on the backend. Austin Ducommun scored the first goal of his career, bodying his way through The Mount's defense to score unassisted at 13:23 of the second.
  • In transition, Colby Barsz forced a Mountaineer turnover and found Brandon Hund on the wing. Hund slid the ball upfield to Avanzato who stung a corner from 10 yards out.
  • Mount St. Mary's got one back near the midway point of the second quarter on Schmitt's tally at 7:42 of the frame.
  • With 5:32 left in the half, Bode Maurer, playing behind the cage, hit Avanzato at goal-line extended, setting up a behind the back goal to put the Tigers up 6-4. That score remained the same through the remainder of the half.
  • Berkeley scored four minutes into the fresh half, using a defender as a screen, whistling home his fifth goal of the year.
  • Mount St. Mary's kept it a two-goal game as Jared McMahon scored with 9:04 to play in the quarter. 
  • From there, Towson's offense went on a six-goal run, kicked off by a jump shot from Swain on a dish from Berkeley. WIth 4:45 to play, Austin Stewart kept his toes out of the crease to finish a feed from Avanzato. Ninety seconds later, Maurer got the first goal of his career, scoring wide open on the crease as Berkeley drew the double. With just 23 seconds left in the third, DeMaio got his second-straight hat trick on a Chop Gallagher feed while he was at goal line.
  • Andrew Milani carried the effort into the fourth quarter, putting the Tigers up 12-5 just 52 seconds into the final frame. Swain added the final tally of the night for Towson with 12:14 to play in the fourth, getting a feed from Avanzato for the latter's second helper.
  • Towson held the Mount scoreless until the final 73 seconds while the Mountaineers scored three times from Kyle DeCrispino, a man-up goal from Justin Weick and a Steven Schmitt tally. Cullen assisted all three goals for the final goals of the game.
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson's ride was highly effective on Tuesday, holding the Mountaineers to just 68 percent clearing efficiency. Conversely, Towson cleared on 25 of its 27 chances, nearly 93 percent on the day.
  • The Tigers out-shot the Mount 44-38, putting 28 of those chances on cage. McGinley made 15 saves in his 58 minutes in net for the Mount, including seven in the first quarter. 
  • Brennan made 12 saves in his 54 minutes before he was spelled by Evan Long for the final six minutes. 
  • The Tigers held a narrow 32-30 ground ball lead, grabbing 18 in the second half alone. Mount St. Mary's had 11 ground balls in the final frame.
  • Avanzato logged five points for a second game this season, going for three goals and two assists against Mount St. Mary's, adding similar numbers in the season opener against No. 16 Johns Hopkins.
  • Berkeley turned in a career effort in assists with his four, adding a goal for another career-best in points. He has nine points through two games this season after a four-goal effort against Hopkins.
  • Similarly, DeMaio scored his second-straight hat trick for the Black & Gold. Maurer and Ducommun got their first career goals as Maurer finished with an assist as well.
  • Head coach Shawn Nadelen won his 90th game at the helm of the Tiger program while Towson snapped a four-game skid dating back to last spring. 
  • The Tigers are 16-2 all-time against Mount St. Mary's while improving to 2-2 in games played on February 15, including a 2-1 mark against Mount St. Mary's on this date.
