MIAMI – The Towson University baseball team led the No. 25 team in the country after five innings on opening night but fell at Miami 10-8 in game one of the four-game series.
Towson (0-1) took the lead off a four-run fourth inning, going ahead off two-run hits from
Jordan Peyton and
Chandler Castleberry, and maintained the advantage through five. Miami (1-0) put up five runs in the sixth as Towson tried to come back but fell a pair of runs short.
Key Stats:
- Towson put up nine hits in the game, including three Tigers earning multi-hit days. Jordan Peyton finished 2-for-4 with a solo home run and three RBI in his first game as a Tiger. Chandler Castleberry notched a triple and double from the leadoff spot, going 2-for-4 with two RBI while Bryce Frederick was 2-for-5, scoring twice.
- On the mound, starter Nick Janowicz did not get a decision with three innings thrown, getting four runs and four strikeouts. The loss went to Jake Pecilunas (0-1), who had three runs in the sixth. Justin Rebok pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings.
- For Miami, Dominic Pitelli had a 4-for-4 day, getting a home run, double and four RBI. Starter Alejandro Rosario had a no decision off five innings, six runs and five strikeouts. The next pitcher, Jordan Dubberly (1-0), won the game with a run surrendered in the sixth innings while Andrew Walters picked up the save, throwing the final 1.2 innings and striking out four.
How It Happened:
- Miami scored in its opening inning with Maxwell Romero hitting a one-out RBI double for a 1-0 home team lead.
- Towson got on the board in the following half-frame. Bryce Frederick reached on a catching error in right field and took second. James Moses looked to push him via sacrifice bunt, reaching on a throwing error from the catcher. Frederick raced home and scored to tie the game at 1-1.
- The Hurricanes got the run back in the latter half of the inning off a solo home run from Dominic Pitelli for a 2-1 Miami score.
- The Tigers got the run back in the top of the third off more small ball. With Casey Bishop on third and one out, Elijah Dickerson hit an RBI ground out to second to bring in a run and tie the game at 2-2.
- Again the Hurricane bats got runs with a Pitelli two-run double in the bottom of the third making the score 4-2 Miami.
- Towson earned a big inning in the top of the fourth, starting with two singles. Three batters later, Jordan Peyton sent a ball back up the middle for a two-run single to tie the game. After a Bishop walk, Chandler Castleberry flew a triple to right field, completing a four-run inning and putting Towson ahead 6-4.
- Miami got back a run on a solo home run in the fifth, then Towson returned the favor with a Peyton home run to get the lead back to two at 7-5.
- The home team rallied for five runs on five consecutive RBI plate appearances to get back the lead at 10-7 after six.
- Towson looked to regroup and threatened in the seventh. Getting two on and two out, an error by the shortstop up the middle allowed Burke Camper to score and get Towson within two at 10-8.
- Justin Rebok came out of the bullpen and held Miami scoreless in the seventh and eighth. But, Towson could not bridge the final gap and fell 10-8.
