Towson Baseball Downed in Extras at George Washington

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Towson University baseball team's six-run lead did not hold as the Tigers fell to George Washington 8-7 in 10 innings in the first mid-week game of the season.

Towson (2-7) led 7-1 after three-and-a-half innings off multi-RBI hits from Nolan Young and Danny Becerra. GW (1-6) scored four in the fourth and a pair in the ninth in extra innings, walking off on a Steve Ditomaso RBI single in the tenth.

Key Stats:
  • Elijah Dickerson went 3-for-5 from the cleanup spot, having a double, a run scored and an RBI.  Danny Becerra reached base three times, going 1-for-2 with a run, two RBI and a pair of walks.
  • On the mound, Nick Janowicz went two innings in his start, getting a no decision with two strikeouts and a run.  Nolan Bolt went 4.1 scoreless innings in relief, having just one hit allowed and striking out one.  The loss went to Justin Rebok (0-1), who had a run surrendered in the tenth despite getting two outs, including a strikeout.
  • For GW, Steve Ditomaso finished 3-for-6 with a run and two RBI, leading all players in hits.  Starter Trevor Kuncl had two innings thrown with a run and a strikeout.  Benny Wilson (1-0) picked up the win after a scoreless tenth inning.
How It Happened:
  • GW got on the board first after getting the first two runners on, proceeding with a couple of groundouts to back in a run to make it 1-0.
  • Towson tied the game in the next half-inning, getting Elijah Dickerson home from second on a two-out single to center from Casey Bishop for a 1-1 score.
  • Into the third, Towson walked the bases loaded with one away.  Dickerson got a single on a comebacker to the pitcher to advance all players a station.  Next batter, Nolan Young found the right-center gap for a two-run single and a 4-1 Towson advantage.
  • The Towson bats continued to roll into the fourth inning.  With one away, Towson put two runners on base.  James Moses belted a ball to right-center for a double, plating Jordan Peyton.  Next batter, Danny Becerra singled down the right field line for a two-run hit, sending the Tigers to a 7-1 lead.
  • GW used five free passes and a pair of singles to get in four runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull within two at 7-5.
  • Nolan Bolt dominated on the hill in relief, allowing just one baserunner in the fifth through the eighth to keep Towson's lead at two.  But in the bottom of the ninth, GW tied the game on a Cade Fergus two-run double off the center field wall to force extra innings at 7-7.
  • Towson threatened in the top of the tenth with back-to-back one-out singles from Bryce Frederick and Bishop, getting them to scoring position with two out, but they could not come across home plate.  GW got first and second with one out.  Justin Rebok struck out the next batter, but Steve Ditomaso floated a single to left to bring in a run as GW walked off with the 8-7 win.
