GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Towson University baseball team earned a multi-run inning in the opening frame but could not hold the advantage in an 8-3 defeat at UNCG to open the weekend series.
Towson (2-8) jumped on the scoreboard early with a run scoring on an error and a
Nolan Young sacrifice fly in the first inning. UNCG (4-5) scored the following eight runs and held off a Towson ninth inning rally attempt to win.
Key Stats:
- Jack McLaughlin earned a 3-for-4 day from the eight spot, driving in a run in the final inning. Chandler Castleberry was 2-for-5 in his home state of North Carolina with a run and a double.
- On the mound, Nate Nabholz (0-2) pitched the first three innings scoreless but got the loss with six innings pitched, having seven runs, only five earned, and three strikeouts.
- For UNCG, Ethan McKay hit 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs and two RBI. The win went to starter Jared Mathewson (2-0), who went seven innings with two unearned runs and five strikeouts.
How It Happened:
- Chandler Castleberry and James Moses hit back-to-back singles and stole bases with one out in the top of the first. Elijah Dickerson reached on an error at second to score Castleberry, then Nolan Young hit a sacrifice fly to plate Moses and give Towson a 2-0 lead.
- Nate Nabholz held down the Spartans though the first three innings scoreless, striking out three batters en route. In the bottom of the fourth, UNCG used two errors to score two runs and tie the game.
- Towson got two on the in the top of the fifth, led by a Jack McLaughlin single, but could not score. In the bottom part of the inning, Kennedy Jones hit a two-run home run with two outs to get the Spartans the lead. UNCG added two more in each the sixth and seventh to be up 8-2.
- The Tigers attempted to rally in the ninth, begun by a Young walk and Bryce Frederick single. Two batters later, McLaughlin roped a single to right-center to bring in a run, but Towson did not get closer in the 8-3 defeat.
Inside the Numbers:
- Chandler Castleberry has reached base in all 10 games this season while James Moses has gotten on base each of his last six contests.
- Towson notched 10 hits, one shy of its season-high in a game this year. The Tigers had 11 hits against Southern on Feb. 26.

Game two is set for tomorrow at 2 p.m. between Towson and UNCG in North Carolina.
