TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University softball team kicked off the TU Tiger Clash in a big way with a pair of victories over visiting Monmouth 2-1 and UAlbany 7-2.
Towson (6-12) took the lead on a wild pitch in the sixth inning vs. Monmouth (3-13), riding a
Julia Jackson complete game victory. In game two, Towson scored seven runs in the opening two innings vs. UAlbany (5-7) en route to the victory.
Due to incoming inclement weather, all Saturday games of the TU Tiger Clash have been canceled. Sunday's games are still scheduled.
Key Stats:
- Mackenzie Lake hit a home run in each game, her first two home runs of the year, combining to go 3-for-6 with three runs and four RBI. Nicole Kidwiler reached base twice in game two, going 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs.
- Towson pitchers earned a pair of complete game seven-inning victories today: Julia Jackson (3-5) won game one, holding Monmouth to four hits with one run and four strikeouts while Melissa Abrahamian (3-5) took game two, having two runs and eight strikeouts.
- For Monmouth, Julia Thuer reached base twice, going 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. Billie Kerwood (2-7) went all six innings in the loss, having two runs and four strikeouts.
- UAlbany was led by Love Drumgole, who hit 3-for-3, adding a hit-by-pitch and stolen base. Starter Maranda Jimenez (2-4) got the loss with seven runs, just four earned, surrendered in 1.1 innings.
How It Happened (Game 1):
- Towson took an early lead in the bottom of the first with Mackenzie Lake's solo home run to left as the Tigers led 1-0.
- Julia Jackson held the Hawks scoreless through the fifth inning, holding Monmouth to one hit through the first five frames. But in the top of the sixth inning, a single, sacrifice bunt and a double got Monmouth's first run to tie the game at 1-1.
- Towson got the lead back in the bottom half of the inning. Briana Ramirez walked and advanced two stations on groundouts. Ramirez broke for home and scored on a wild pitch. Jackson pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh to secure the 2-1 Towson win.
How It Happened (Game 2):
- UAlbany got the first run in the opening half-inning on a Maddie Petrella RBI single to lead 1-0.
- Towson's bats got rolling quickly in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Chloe Poulich singled to left to drive in two runs to give Towson the lead. Next batter, Madyson Peters found the right-center gap for a two-run double and a 4-1 Towson lead.
- Towson was not done, getting more runs in the bottom of the second. Emma Armstrong doubled then Nicole Kidwiler singled. Two batters later, Mackenzie Lake again hit a home run to left for three RBI and a 7-1 home team advantage.
- Melissa Abrahamian held off a potential UAlbany rally in the fifth and kept the six-run lead safe until the sixth when the Great Danes got a run on an RBI single to pull within five. Abrahamian did not allow another run and led Towson to victory 7-2.
