Costello Collects 750th Career Win as Towson Softball Splits Wednesday Doubleheader at Villanova

VILLANOVA, PA. – Towson University softball coach Lisa Costello collected the 750th win of her coaching career when the Tigers defeated Villanova 4-3 in the opening game of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.

Now in her 27th season at the helm of the Towson University softball program, Costello has guided the Tigers to six runner-up finishes in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and two more while the program was in the America East Conference. Towson entered the 2022 season having won at least 20 games 22 times under Costello. She has nine 30-win seasons and a 42-win campaign in 2018. The 750 victories rank 33rd on the active list of collegiate softball coaches.

In the milestone win, Mackenzie Lake hit a 2-run home run in the opening frame to give the Tigers a 2-0 cushion. It was the third straight game that Lake had homered. Briana Ramirez broke a 2-2 tie with a bases loaded double in the fourth inning. Julia Jackson (4-5) went the distance for her third straight victory.

In the nightcap, the Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Villanova broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the fifth inning to earn the split in a 4-3 win.

Records:
  • Towson – 7-13 (0-0 CAA)

How it Happened (Game 1):
  • After Ramirez legged out a 1-0 out infield single, Lake launched her 3rd HR in as many games to give Towson a 2-0 lead.
  • With the score tie at 2-all in the top of the fourth, Towson took the lead for good. Gracyn Houmis singled to center with one out and moved to third on consecutive walks to Ally Hickman and Emma Armstrong. Ramirez delivered a two out double down the LF line to score a pair.
  • Down 4-3 in the sixth inning, Villanova had a runner on third base, but Jackson struck out Sydney Hayes to retire the side.
How it Happened (Game 2):
  • The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Chloe Poulich drove in a run with a bases loaded single to give Towson a 1-0 advantage. After Sydni Byers scored on a wild pitch, Madyson Peters brought Poulich home to make it 3-0 before Villanova came to the plate.
