TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University softball team picked up a five-run lead in the opening five innings and held the advantage the rest of the way for a 6-3 victory vs. Lafayette on Saturday at UMBC.
Towson (8-13) scored two in the second and three in the fifth, holding off a Lafayette (5-14) rally for its fifth straight victory in weekend games.
Key Stats:
- Briana Ramirez notched a 3-for-4 day, stealing a base, scoring a run and driving in a run. Madyson Peters finished 2-for-2 with a run and a walk while Chloe Poulich hit a two-run home run. Cori Jones drove in two runs in a 1-for-3 afternoon.
- On the hill, Julia Jackson (5-5) earned a complete game victory, going all seven innings with three runs and three strikeouts. No Leopard earned a multi-hit game.
- For Lafayette, Julia Roman went 1-for-3 with a two-run single in the sixth. Starter Jacqueline Cal (1-5) got the loss with five runs and two strikeouts in 4.1 innings.
How It Happened:
- Following a scoreless first inning, Towson picked up second and third with one away in the bottom of the second. Cori Jones found the left-center gap for a two-run double, putting the Tigers up 2-0.
- Julia Jackson held Lafayette off the scoreboard through the fifth inning, where Towson added to its lead. After Briana Ramirez singled and stole second with one out, Sydni Byers doubled to center to score Ramirez. Byers stole third base and came home after Chloe Poulich knocked a ball over the left field fence for a two-run home run and a 5-0 Towson lead.
- Lafayette picked up a few two-out runs in the top of the sixth off a Julia Roman two-run single and a Kaili Reitano sacrifice fly to pull to 5-3 Towson.
- Towson got a run back the next time to bat. Katie Capizzi reached on a one-out error at third and stole two bases. Ramirez hit an infield single to second to bring in Capizzi for a 6-3 Towson lead.
- Lafayette got the tying run to the plate with first and second with two out in the seventh, but Jackson survived a 13-pitch final at bat to induce a line out and end the game with a 6-3 Towson victory.
