BALTIMORE – The Towson University softball team rallied from a four-run deficit with six runs in the final three innings to win vs. Quinnipiac 9-7 at UMBC on Sunday afternoon.
Towson (9-13) was down four runs after Quinnipiac (3-11) scored seven in the third inning. Towson scored in each of the final three frames, including four runs in the eighth to take back the lead, holding the Bobcats to no runs in the final four innings.
With the victory, Towson has won its last six weekend games.
Key Stats:
- With 13 hits on the day, Towson saw four players earn multi-hit performances. Gracyn Houmis finished 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Nicole Kidwiler reached base four times on a 2-for-3 afternoon, walking twice, scoring twice and driving in a run. Chloe Poulich was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI while Mackenzie Lake had a double in a 2-for-5 afternoon, adding an RBI and a run.
- On the mound, Melissa Abrahamian did not decision in her start, going 2.1 innings with three runs and a pair of strikeouts. Julia Jackson (6-5) picked up the win in relief, throwing 4.2 innings with four runs and two strikeouts.
- For Quinnipiac, Brooke Hilliard finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and a walk. Reliever Sydney Horan (3-2) got the loss with five runs, just three earned, in 3.2 innings, striking out two.
How It Happened:
- Towson got started in a big way in the top of the second. Gracyn Houmis knocked a two-run home run over the left field fence for Towson to be on the scoreboard first. Later, Nicole Kidwiler sent a ball to right-center for an RBI single and a 3-0 Towson lead.
- In the bottom of the third, Quinnipiac scored seven runs off seven hits and a walk to lead 7-3.
- Towson got a run back in the top of the fifth, piecing together a double, single and Cori Jones RBI single with two outs to pull within two.
- The rally sent the Tigers ahead in the top of the sixth. Following a walk, fielder's choice and fielding error, Sydni Byers slapped a single down the right field line for two runs. Next batter, Chloe Poulich singled to right-center to bring in another run. Towson took the lead on a double steal to push the Tigers up 8-7.
- Towson added insurance in the seventh as Kidwiler hit a one-out single, took second on a passed ball and advanced to third on sacrifice bunt. Mackenzie Lake doubled to left-center to bring home Kidwiler. In the bottom of the seventh, Quinnipiac got the tying run to the plate, but Julia Jackson held and Towson took the 9-7 victory.
