Towson Baseball Overpowers Niagara on Wednesday Afternoon

TOWSON, Md. – In a mid-week game against Niagara University, the Towson University baseball team improved its record at Schuerholz Park by handing the Purple Eagles a 15-2 loss on Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Tigers took advantage of seven walks and a wild pitch in the first inning as they scored seven runs and led the rest of the way.
 
Key Stats:
  • Towson earned a 12-hit performance, its highest of the season, and held Niagara to just four hits.
  • Three Tigers multi-hit, led by Jack McLaughlin reaching base five times, going 2-for-2 with a double, two runs and three walks.  Chandler Castleberry hit a home run in a 2-for-3 afternoon, walking twice and driving in two while Burke Camper also homered, going 1-for-2 with two runs and two walks.
  • Started Ethan Pecko went just the first inning scoreless.  Max Simpson (1-0) picked up his first Towson victory, going three innings with a run.
  • For Niagara, Nick Castellana hit 2-for-3 with a walk and run scored.  Starter Zac Laird (0-2) got the loss, allowing seven runs in two-thirds of an inning.
How It Happened:
  • Bottom of First: A leadoff triple by Chandler Castleberry set the tone for a seven-run rally. Castleberry, who later drew a bases-loaded in the inning, scored the first run on an RBI single by James Moses to give Towson a 1-0 lead. Towson sent 13 batters to the plate. Moses capped off the rally with a two-run double giving the Tigers a 7-0 lead.
  • Top of Third: Niagara got on the scoreboard when Nick Castellana drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on an infield groundout.
  • Bottom of Fifth: Castleberry belted a solo home run to left center field, upping the lead to 8-1.
  • Top of Sixth: Dawson Bailey blasted a solo home to centerfield, cutting the lead to 8-2.
  • Bottom of Sixth: The Tigers added six runs to take a 14-2 lead. Catcher Burke Camper launched a two-run homer down the leftfield line to give the Tigers a 10-2 edge. Back-to-back doubles by Jack McLaughlin and Jordan Payton drove in another run. A two-run double by Danny Becerra upped the lead to 13-2 before Beccera scored on an RBI single by Nick Brown.
Inside the Numbers
  • The Tigers used six different pitchers, including winning pitcher Max Simpson, who allowed one run on one hit in three innings of work ... The six Tiger pitchers held Niagara to four hits and struck out six.
  • The Tigers worked Niagara pitching for 13 walks as McLaughlin drew three of them.
