TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team used four home runs, including a pair off the bat of
Burke Camper, to defeat Princeton 9-6 in the opening contest of the four-game series on Friday afternoon.
Towson (6-11) used a six-run inning to take the lead vs. Princeton (0-12) and kept the advantage the rest of the way. Princeton got the potential tying run at the in the eighth, but the Tigers held for the win.
Key Stats:
- Four Tigers earn multi-hit performances while three different Towson players hit home runs.
- Burke Camper notched a two-home run day, finishing 2-for-4 with four RBI. Elijah Dickerson also homered to go 3-for-4 with two RBI and a walk while Jack McLaughlin hit Towson's other home run, concluding at 2-for-3 with two runs and a walk.
- On the mound, starter Nate Nabholz had a no decision despite leaving with the lead, going 4.2 innings with five runs, only four earned, and six strikeouts. The next pitcher, Cam Clark (1-0), got the win with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief while Jake Pecilunas got his second save of the season with one-and-a-third scoreless innings of work.
- Princeton hit two home runs, including one from Nadir Lewis, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBI and a walk. Starter Jason Ramirez (0-1) got the loss in first start of the year, allowing four runs in 3.1 innings of work, striking out two.
How It Happened:
- After a scoreless first inning, Matt Scannell hit a leadoff home run for a 1-0 Princeton lead in the top of the second. Nadir Lewis added another home run in the top of the third for a 2-0 Princeton advantage.
- Towson got its bats going in the bottom of the fourth. Three batters in, Elijah Dickerson blasted a ball over the right field fence for a two-run home run. Towson notched a couple of singles to bring up Burke Camper. Camper hit a moon shot down the left field line for a three-run home run, then next batter, Jack McLaughlin sent another pitch out to left-center for a solo home run. Towson's three-home run inning made it 6-2 Towson.
- Princeton responded in the following half-inning, starting with putting two on with one out. A single, double and wild pitch got Princeton three runs to pull the visitors within one at 6-5.
- Towson repaired its lead in the bottom of the sixth, beginning with loading the bases on free passes with one away. James Moses hit an infield single to bring in a run, then two batters later, a fielding error at short allowed another run to score and make it 8-5 Towson.
- Camper was not finished, belting a first pitch over the left field wall in the bottom of the seventh to give Towson a 9-5 lead.
- Princeton had a final rally in it in the eighth, with Brendan Cumming hitting a double with runners on the corners with two out for a run scored. Jake Pecilunas induced a ground out to end the inning. Towson held the rest of the way and won 9-6.
Inside the Numbers:
- This is Towson's second 4+ home run performance of the year, having five home runs in last Friday's win over FDU.
- Jake Pecilunas made his 89th pitching appearance for Towson, increasing his own program record, and moves into tying for fifth all-time in career saves with eight.
- Burke Camper earns his first-ever two-home run game.
