TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team had the lead after seven innings of game one of the doubleheader vs. Princeton on Saturday, but fell in each game to the visitors 18-11 and 21-8.
Towson (6-13) led 6-4 after seven innings vs. Princeton (2-12) in game one, but the visiting team got hot with the bats with 35 runs in the final 11 innings of play. After three games, Princeton has a 2-1 series lead.
Key Stats:
- Nolan Young earned multi-hit games in each contest, combining to go 4-for-8 with three runs, two RBI and a walk. Danny Becerra also had multi-hit performances in both games, finishing 4-for-10 with a home run and two RBI. Burke Camper had a two-home run day in the opening game, going 3-for-3 with three runs and a walk in that contest.
- Neither starter decisioned for Towson. Nick Janowicz went three innings in game one with three runs and six strikeouts while Doug Marose went four frames, having seven runs and two strikeouts. Game one's defeat went to Tyler Russo (0-1), who had three runs on one-third of an inning in the eighth while in game two, the defeat went to Brett Seils (0-1) with eight runs in 1.1 innings.
- For Princeton, Brendan Cumming combined to go 8-for-12 with three home runs, seven runs and 12 RBI. Game one reliever Eric Hoefer (1-1) got the win, throwing two innings with three runs while game two starter Tom Chmielewski (1-2) had the win off five innings, seven runs and six strikeouts.
How It Happened (Game 1):
- After Nick Janowicz pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the first, Chandler Castleberry ripped a single through the left side and took third on an error, scoring on a James Moses ground out. Two batters later, Elijah Dickerson found the right-center gap for a triple, scoring on a Nolan Young infield single to make it 2-0 Towson.
- Next inning, Burke Camper walked and took second on a wild pitch. Jordan Peyton found a spot on a bloop single to right to bring in Camper as Towson led 3-0.
- Princeton took advantage of a couple of free passes and singles, tying the game at 3-3, including a two-run single off the bat of Carlos Abello.
- Camper continued his hot streak in the bottom of the fourth, launching a ball high and down the left field line for a solo home run. Next inning, Danny Becerra took a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall for his solo home run as Towson took a 5-3 lead.
- The teams exchanged a run in the seventh, Princeton on a Matt Scannell solo home run and Towson on a Young RBI single, to put the score at 6-4 Towson.
- Princeton surged ahead in the top of the eighth, using a Noah Grant two-run single, Nick DiPietrantonio grand slam and Brandon Cumming two-run home run to lead 12-6.
- Towson immediately looked to rally, beginning with Camper's second home run of the day, a solo shot to right-center. The home team added two more on a Moses bases loaded walk and another on a double play to pull within three at 12-9 Princeton.
- Princeton's bats continued to stay hot into the ninth, getting an RBI hit-by-pitch, an RBI single, then Nadir Lewis hit a grand slam to make it 18-9 Princeton.
- Towson put together a final rally in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases on walks. Two runs came across on a fielder's choice to second, but the rally came up short as Princeton got the win 18-11.
How It Happened (Game 2):
- On the first pitch of the game, Brendan Cumming hit a home run to center for a 1-0 visitors' lead.
- Towson responded with a big inning to start. Beginning with two walks, Towson saw Danny Becerra find the hole on the right side for an RBI single, then Elijah Dickerson hit a sacrifice fly. After a single and double steal, Jack McLaughlin grounded a ball up the middle for a two-run single, resulting in a 4-1 Towson lead.
- Princeton's bats continued to swing, getting three runs in the second, including a two-run single by Cumming, and three more in the third, capped by a two-run triple by Jordan Kelly, as the visitors led 7-4.
- Towson countered in the bottom half of the third. The home team earned four consecutive hits, capped by a Bryce Frederick RBI double and a McLaughlin single. Three batters later, Chandler Castleberry notched a seeing-eye single past short to tie the game at seven.
- Following a scoreless fourth, Princeton used four walks and two singles to score four runs in the fifth and lead 11-7.
- The visitors continued to earn runs, adding six more in the sixth and three more in the seventh. Towson got one back in the bottom of the seventh off a solo home run by Ryan Terrents, but could not get closer in the game. Princeton added one more in the eighth for the 21-8 win.
