Towson, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball fell in the first round of the WNIT to Old Dominion, 72-66, on Friday night.
Allie Kubek recorded a monster double-double with 21 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Aleah Nelson led the team with 23 points while adding six assists and two steals.

How it Happened
- Old Dominion came out fast, getting out to a 9-4 lead early. Towson kept it close though, as Gary tied it up, 9-9, with a three at the 6:41 mark. The Monarchs pulled away to regain the lead at the 4:53 media timeout, 11-9.
- Out of the stop, Gary hit two at the line to knot the score up once again, 11-all.
- In the final moments of the first, ODU went on a 7-2 skid to take the 20-15 edge. Nelson added two free throws from the line to put the score within three points, 20-17.
- The tight first quarter featured five ties, but the Monarchs did not lose the lead for the entire 10 minute span.
- Old Dominion kept it going in the second, hitting an early three to extend its lead, 23-17. Kubek had the answer for the Tigers however, as she scored all six of the team's points leading up to the 4:34 media timeout to make the score 27-23.
- The two teams traded baskets as the first half came to a close. Nelson added two more shots from the charity stripe with just five seconds left to tie the score up, 31-31. Old Dominion hit one from deep at the buzzer though to take the 34-31 lead into the locker room.
- Kubek led the team at the half with 12 points and seven rebounds, well on her way to her ultimate double-double.
- ODU got two quick scores to start the second half and stay in control, 38-31. Nelson kept the momentum going, scoring on three possessions in a row, to put the game within six points, 44-38.
- Ryann Evans and Kubek followed up with scores to further cut the Monarch's lead, 44-42. It did not stay close for long though as Old Dominion stormed back to extend its advantage, 48-42.
- Nelson added her second three of the contests but ODU answered with their own shot from beyond the arc to stay in front, 53-46. The Monarchs continued to go on a 7-0 run and take the 57-48 lead.
- Skye Williams ended the third for the Black & Gold with a three-point-play to make the score 57-49 going into the final 10 minutes of play.
- Kubek got a rebound and a bucket to start the final quarter for Towson and put the game within nine points, 60-51. Gary piled on with a three-pointer to further cut the deficit, 60-54.
- Kubek added a floater in the paint to cap a 7-0 run for the Tigers and put the game within four points, 60-56. The team held ODU to 0-of-4 from the field in the span.
- Old Dominion ended the spurt with a free throw, but shortly after Nelson drew the foul and made both from the line to put the score back within three, 61-58. The teams went on to trade possessions, playing tough defense, until ODU broke through with just under four to go, 63-58.
- Rivera, Nelson and Kubek added layups in the final seconds of action to keep it tight. With under 10 seconds to go, Rivera made one from the charity stripe, but ODU stayed in front to edge the Tigers, 72-66.
Inside the Numbers
- Friday's contest against Old Dominion was Towson's first berth in the WNIT since 1969. It was also the first postseason appearance for the Tigers since 1029 when they advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
- The Black & Gold ended the season with a program-best 24 wins. They were also the fastest team in program history in 20 wins. Since arriving in Towson in 2017, head coach Diane Richardson has now garnered two 20-win seasons, as she led the 2018-19 squad to a 20-13 overall mark.
- At least two Tigers have cracked double figures in 31 of 32 outings so far this season as three landed in double figures against the Monarchs. Nelson has scored 10+ points in 30 of 32 games this slate, including the final 17 outings.
- Kubek's 16 rebounds broke her previous career high of 14 boards set against Drexel last season (Feb. 21, 2021). The double-double marks the sixth of the season and ninth of her career.
- Towson has had two players score 20 or more points five times this season as Kubek (21) and Nelson (23) both reached +20 points against ODU. This is the third time this season they have reach 20+ points in the same game as the pair also did it against Northeastern - Jan. 28 (Nelson-24, Kubek-22) and Delaware - Feb. 9 (Nelson-24, Kubek-20).
- The Tigers out-rebounded the Monarches 44-40. grabbed 40+ boards in all but four contests so far this season, including the last 17 of 20 outings. Towson has either won the fight off the glass or tied in 22 games.
