Men’s Lacrosse Surges Past Loyola on the Road

BALTIMORE – Making its first road trip of the 2022 season, the Towson University men's lacrosse team picked up an 11-8 win over Loyola University Maryland at the Ridley Athletic Complex Wednesday night.

Towson (2-3) had a pair of hat tricks from Luke Shilling and Kyle Berkeley. Shilling added an assist to tie for the game-high with four points alongside teammate James Avanzato (2g, 2a). Shane Brennan made a dozen saves while the Tiger defense forced nine turnovers

Loyola (0-4) was paced by three points from Adam Poitras (2g, 1a), while six other Greyhounds scored to account for the remaining six goals. Bailey Savio won 15 of the game's 23 draws while collecting 10 ground balls.

How it Happened
  • Loyola opened the scoring 70 seconds into the game as Seth Higgins scored his first unassisted.
  • Towson scored back-to-back goals, kicked off by a crease dunk from Shilling with Avanzato on the backside for the assist. Avanzato gave Towson it's first lead of the night with 9:37 to play as he scored on a diving shot in front of the goal.
  • The Greyhounds tied the score at 2-2 on an Aidan Olmstead goal behind an Poitras assist.
  • Towson tied the game for a third time in the first quarter on a lucky break for Koby Smith. After Reece Potter jarred the ball loose from his Loyola midfielder, Koby came down and banked his second of the year off Sam Shafer's left hip to trickle in for a 3-2 Towson lead.
  • The hosts regained a one-goal lead after faceoff specialist Bailey Savio scored just four seconds after Smith. Dylan Binney finished a Higgins pass for a 4-3 lead with 69 seconds left in the opening quarter. That margin stood up at the end of the period.
  • Towson scored back-to-back to open the second quarter as both Shilling and Berkeley scored in succession to give the TIgers a 5-4 advantage. That lead was short lived as Loyola scored a minute later for a 5-5 tie.
  • The Hounds took a 6-5 lead with 2:44, 10 seconds after the previous goal. But Berkeley bullied his way through Loyola's defense again for his second with 97 seconds left in the half, which finished tied 6-6.
  • Towson opened up the second half on a three-goal run as Nick DeMaio drove from behind to score on a back-handed shot to the far post for his seventh goal in the last two games.
  • Austin Stewart and Berkeley scored similar goals to give the Tigers a 9-6 lead as both dove just in front of the Greyhound crease. It gave Berkeley his second hat trick of the season.
  • Loyola cut into the lead with 2:22 to play in the third on a Poistras strike, giving Towson a 9-7 edge after 45 minutes.
  • Midway through the fourth quarter, Avanzato tagged the Greyhounds for his second of the day, taking advantage of a low-to-high rip on the power play. Shilling had his fifth assist in the last two games with the effort.
  • Loyola scored once more with 25 seconds left in regulation to cut Towson's lead to two, 10-8. But faceoff specialist Matt Constantinides won the next faceoff and found a wide-open Shilling on the crease for the former's second career assist and the former's fifth goal of the season to ice the win 11-8.
Behind the Numbers
  • Shilling and Avanzato finished with a game-high four points, Shilling going for his first career hat trick with three goals and one assist while Avanzato chipped in an even two goals and two assists.  Berkeley added his second career hat trick while DeMaio, Smith and Stewart all scored once.
  • Constantinides won eight faceoffs, but improved markedly in the second half to win six of the nine chances, including a 4-for-5 third quarter to help distance Towson from Loyola.
  • The Tigers closed well, out-scoring Loyola 5-2 in the second half of the game and 8-4 over the final 45 minutes.
  • Brennan made a dozen saves in the win, including seven in the second half, with four coming in the fourth quarter.
  • Towson was much improved in clearing, gaining the zone 18 times on 20 chances while riding Loyola to an 18-of-23 ratio.
  • Towson scored the lone man-up goal of the game on Avanzato's low-to-high. Towson held the Greyhounds off the board on its three penalty kills.
  • Towson has won three of the last four meetings with Loyola, including back-to-back wins for the first time since 2005-2006-2007. The Tigers topped Loyola 7-6 in overtime at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium last spring.
  • The Tigers have won two of their three games against in-state foes with one more chance on Saturday.
  • Wednesday's win was Towson's first at the Ridley Athletic Complex since March 2, 2016. It is also the Tigers' second-straight road win, dating back to April 17, 2021 at UMass, Towson's game away from home.
  • Wednesday was the 91st win of head coach Shawn Nadelen's career.
  • Towson's offense has reached double digits in four of the five games this season. It is the 49th time under Nadelen the Tigers have scored in double digits while holding opponents to single digits.
  • The Tigers won their 31st game all-time against Loyola, which has won the game 34 times.
