Towson Baseball Falls to #10 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Towson University baseball team put together a ninth inning rally but came up short in a 15-3 defeat to No. 10 Virginia to begin its Spring Break road trip.
 
Towson (7-14) played its seventh game of the season against a ranked opponent.  Virginia (20-1) won its sixth straight contest.
 
Key Stats:
  • Nick Brown earned an RBI double in the ninth in his lone at bat in the ninth inning.  Chandler Castleberry had an RBI double in a 1-for-5 afternoon while Nolan Young reached base twice, being 1-for-2 with a walk.  Starting pitcher Teddy Blumenauer (0-4) got the defeat with six runs in two-thirds of an inning.  Relievers Justin Rebok and Jordan Peyton each had scoreless innings.
  • For Virginia, Griff O'Ferrall hit 3-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and four RBI.  Starter Matthew Buchanan (2-0) picked up the victory, going four innings scoreless with four strikeouts.
How It Happened:
  • James Moses got hit by a pitch in the top of the first and got second on the next batter but was stranded.  Virginia scored 10 runs in the first two innings at the plate.
  • With Andalo Santangelo holding down Virginia in the third and fourth innings, Towson got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth.  With two out, Chandler Castleberry found the left-center gap for a double to score Jack McLaughlin from second and get the Tigers a run.
  • The home team added five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • Justin Rebok and Jordan Peyton pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth inning respectively as Towson came up to bat in the ninth.  Towson got first and second with one out.  Nick Brown hit a double down the right field line to bring in Jacob Terao, and next batter, Andrew Barbour brought in Matt Arceo on a ground out.  Virginia took the victory 15-3.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Chandler Castleberry has reached base in all 21 games played this season.  James Moses increased his bases reached streak to 17 games with a hit-by-pitch.
