Towson Baseball Takes Series Opener vs. UMass

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team had three multi-run innings to earn a 9-7 victory over UMass to open the weekend series.

Towson (8-14) scored four in the opening inning, adding two more multi-run contests and holding off a late comeback attempt by UMass (6-7-1) to take the victory.

Key Stats:
  • Towson had a nine-hit afternoon, including six for extra bases.  Two of those hits were home runs: from Bryce Frederick and Jack McLaughlin.
  • James Moses was 3-for-5 with a triple, two doubles and two RBI from the leadoff spot.  McLaughlin reached base four times, going 2-for-2 with his home run, three runs and two RBI.  Frederick finished 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, a double and two runs scored.
  • On the mound, Nate Nabholz (1-2) earned his first win as a Tiger, throwing five innings with three runs and five strikeouts.  Nolan Bolt pitched 3.2 innings with four runs, only one earned, with three strikeouts, with Jake Pecilunas getting the final out on a ground out for his fourth save of the year.
  • For UMass, Kevin Skagerlind went 3-for-5, having a double and a run.  Starter Jake Steele (1-3) got the defeat with four runs allowed in two-thirds of an inning.
How It Happened:
  • UMass pieced together a couple of singles in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead.  Towson responded with hits and patience.  Towson loaded the bases with one away.  A Nolan Young RBI walk, Danny Becerra RBI single, Jack McLaughlin RBI walk and Max Samson RBI fielder's choice got Towson up 4-1.
  • The visitors got back a run in similar fashion from the previous inning, with back-to-back hits getting a runner across home plate and making it 4-2 Towson in the top of the second.
  • To the bottom of the fourth, McLaughlin walked and took third on a fielder's choice and fly out.  James Moses rocketed a ball down the right field line for a double, scoring McLaughlin and pushing Towson up 5-2.
  • UMass began the top of the sixth with back-to-back doubles to score another run.  Nate Nabholz pitched out of it with a fielder's choice, fly out and strikeout to preserve Towson's advantage at 5-3.
  • Bryce Frederick delivered some instant offense in the bottom of the sixth, sending a pitch over the left field fence for a two-run home run and a 7-3 Towson lead.
  • Again UMass responded a half-inning after Towson scored.  With two on and one out, a Drew DeMartino sacrifice fly brought in a run and made it 7-4 Towson.
  • Towson added insurance in the bottom of the eighth inning, adding a McLaughlin solo home run to left-center and a James Moses triple to right-center to lead 9-4.
  • UMass put together a final rally, getting an RBI ground out and a two-run double to put the tying run at the plate.  Jake Pecilunas induced a final ground out to give Towson the 9-7 victory.

  • Jake Pecilunas has 10 career saves, good for fourth all-time at Towson.
  • Chandler Castleberry's 21-game bases reached streak was snapped today.  James Moses increased his streak to 18-straight games.
