TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team had a 3-1 lead after five innings in the middle game of the weekend series vs. UMass, narrowly falling to the Minutemen 4-3.
Towson (8-15) had a two-run lead through five vs. UMass (7-7-1), but the Minutemen scored three in the sixth to take the lead. Towson mustered baserunners in the next three innings but could not score as the series evened up at 1-1.
Key Stats:
- Two Tigers earned multi-hit days: Burke Camper reached base three times, going 2-for-3 with a walk, a run and two RBI while Jordan Peyton was 2-for-4, scoring a run.
- On the mound, Nick Janowicz (0-2) had the defeat, having four runs, with just one before the sixth inning, and a pair of strikeouts in 5.2 frames. The bullpen of Cam Clark, Tyler Russo and Justin Rebok did not allow a run in the last three innings.
- For UMass, Kevin Skagerlind had the go-ahead two-run single in the sixth inning, finishing 1-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch. Starter Kevin Dow (3-1) got the victory, going five innings with three runs and eight strikeouts while reliever Tyler Dalton picked up the save, going four scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
How It Happened:
- Towson got on the board first in the opening inning. Two batters after a Chandler Castleberry double, a single to right-center by Burke Camper brought in a run and made it 1-0.
- Nick Janowicz held the Minutemen scoreless through the third inning, then Drew DeMartino hit a solo home run to even the game in the fourth. Towson got the lead right back: Camper singled and advanced to third via groundouts. Jack McLaughlin hit a single to first base, allowing Camper to score for a 2-1 Towson lead.
- Camper again came through in the bottom of the fifth. Towson loaded the bases with one away. Camper drew a walk on a full count to push home Jordan Peyton for a 3-1 Towson lead.
- In the top of the sixth, UMass got the bases loaded with two out. Michael Rounds walked to push in a run, then Kevin Skagerlind hit a two-run single to left-center to give the visitors a 4-3 lead.
- Towson tried to counter, getting first and second with two out in the sixth, but could not score. UMass held the rest of the way and won 4-3.
