TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team fell to UMass in the series finale on a visitor ninth inning rally as the Minutemen got a 5-4 win.
Towson (8-16) was ahead 4-2 going into the ninth after a two-run single by
Danny Becerra put the Tigers ahead in the ninth vs. UMass (8-7-1). The Minutemen scored three in the ninth and held for the victory.
Key Stats:
- Chandler Castleberry had a strong day from the leadoff spot, going 2-for-5 with a double and two runs. Danny Becerra was 2-for-4 with two RBI while Jack McLaughlin hit 2-for-3 with a walk.
- Starter Nick Ramanjulu got a no-decision despite 5.2 strong innings, having two runs and six strikeouts. The loss went to reliever Jake Pecilunas (1-2), who had the final run surrendered in the ninth inning.
- For UMass, Drew DeMartino brought home three runs, including the go-ahead RBI in the ninth, hitting 2-for-4 with a double. Daniel Livnat went six innings in his start with a run and three strikeouts, with reliever Jack Pawloski (1-0) getting the victory off 2.1 scoreless inning pitched, striking out two.
How It Happened:
- Towson got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first, getting runners on the corners with two out. Nolan Young reached on a slow bouncer to third for an RBI single and a 1-0 Towson lead.
- Nick Ramanjulu held UMass scoreless through the first two innings, but in the third, a two-out two-run double by Drew DeMartino gave UMass the lead 2-1.
- Ramanjulu and Doug Marose combined to hold off UMass through the seventh. Towson loaded the bases off two hits and a walk. Elijah Dickerson fought back from down 0-2 to get a walk and RBI and tie the game. Two batters later with the bases full and two out, Danny Becerra lined a single to the left-center gap to bring home a pair. Towson had a 4-2 lead entering the ninth.
- UMass picked up runners on the corners with nobody out, getting a run on a safety squeeze. The team loaded the bases on hit-by-pitches, then a Kevin Skagerlind single tied the game. Jake Pecilunas induced an infield fly to get the second out, but DeMartino hit an infield single to short to push the visitors ahead 5-4.
- Burke Camper walked with one out to get on-base in the ninth, but a ground ball double play ended the inning. Towson fell 5-4 to UMass.
