Towson Baseball Three-Run Third Not Enough, Downed at Maryland

BOX SCORE COLLEGE PARK, Md. – 10 different Towson University baseball team players earned hits against a tough Big Ten opponent, but the Tigers fell to Maryland 26-8

Towson (8-17) scored three runs in the third inning to cut Maryland (19-5)'s early lead to four, but the Terrapins' multi-run innings proved to be decisive.  Towson will enter league play this weekend.

Key Stats:
  • James Moses notched two doubles from the leadoff spot, finishing 2-for-3 with a run scored.  Jake Lysaght had a two-run single in the seventh, reaching base twice with a walk.
  • The loss went to starter Ethan Pecko (0-1), who had four runs in a third of an inning.
  • For Maryland, Nick Lorusso hit 3-for-4 with a home run and six RBI.  Reliever Andrew Johnson (1-0), pitching scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth.
How It Happened:
  • James Moses hit a leadoff double to the left-center gap to begin the game but was stranded.  Maryland scored four runs in the bottom half of the first, capped by a Matt Shaw two-run home run, to lead 4-0.
  • Towson got the bats going in the top of the second as Nolan Young and Danny Becerra hit back-to-back singles to begin the inning.  Jack McLaughlin hit into a fielder's choice to short to bring home Young and make it 4-1 Maryland.  The Terps got four more in the second to go up 8-1.
  • Jordan Peyton and Moses got on via single and double respectively in the third.  A wild pitch allowed Peyton to score, then Chandler Castleberry belted a grounder down the left field line for a double and RBI.  Two batters later, Burke Camper found the hole on the right side for a ground ball single, scoring Castleberry to get Towson within four at 8-4 Maryland.  Again Maryland responded with three home runs for six runs.
  • Maryland got five more in the fourth before Brett Seils pitched a scoreless fifth.  Towson got a run back in the sixth
  • In the seventh, the bats came alive with two outs.  A Trent Gast-Woodard RBI ground rule double in the seventh on a blast to left field, then a line drive two-run single by Jake Lysaght made it 19-8 Maryland.
  • The home team added seven runs in the seventh.  Maryland took the victory 26-8.
Inside the Numbers:
  • James Moses has reached base in 21 consecutive games while Nolan Young has reached in his last 17 contests.
  • Brett Seils earned his longest outing of the year with two innings thrown.
  • This was the first meeting between Towson and Maryland since 2018.
Next Game:
CAA play begins on Friday, April 1st at 3 p.m. as Towson hosts Delaware at Schuerholz.
