Ramirez Triples Twice in Towson Softball Doubleheader Split vs. Morgan State

TOWSON, Md. – Briana Ramirez notched a triple in each doubleheader contest today as the Towson University softball team split the contests vs. Morgan State, winning game one 3-2 before falling 12-3 (6) in the second contest.
 
Towson (10-17) took game one vs. Morgan State (14-11) following a Cori Jones go-ahead solo home run in the sixth inning, riding Julia Jackson's complete game on the mound.  Towson had the early advantage in game two off a two-run double by Mackenzie Lake, but Morgan State scored the next 12 runs en route to a win.
 
Before the game, Towson honored head coach Lisa Costello for her 750th career victory with the Tigers.  Towson director of athletics Steve Eigenbrot and associate athletic director for compliance Terry Porter were on-hand for the ceremony.
 
Key Stats:
  • Briana Ramirez combined to hit 3-for-6 in the game with two triples, one in each game, and three runs.  Mackenzie Lake finished 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI, also having a hit-by-pitch.
  • Julia Jackson (7-7) won game one with a complete game, throwing seven innings with two runs, just one earned, striking out three.  The loss in game two went to Sydni Byers (0-1), who had five runs in two innings of relief.
  • For Morgan State, Tayven Rousseau hit safely in both games, going 3-for-8 with a home run and two runs scored.  Emily Raubuch (1-3) got the loss in game one, throwing four innings with a run in relief, while Anaya Hunte (7-2) pitched a six-inning complete game in the second contest, having three runs and two strikeouts.
How It Happened (Game 1):
  • Morgan State got the first run on a double steal in the opening inning.  Towson equalized in the bottom half: with the bases full, Sydni Byers grounded out to third to allow Nicole Kidwiler to score, tying the game at 1-1.
  • Briana Ramirez led off the third with a triple down the left field line.  Mackenzie Lake followed with a single up the middle, scoring Ramirez for a 2-1 Towson advantage.
  • Julia Jackson had a no-hitter through three innings.  Morgan State got its first hit to lead off the fourth and later scored on a fielder's choice for a 2-2 contest.
  • Into the sixth with two outs, Cori Jones sent Towson ahead with a solo home run over the left-center wall to make it 3-2 Tigers.  Jackson held in the seventh as Towson took the 3-2 victory.
How It Happened (Game 2):
  • Lake continued her hot bat into the second game.  With two on, she hit a ball off the left-center wall for a two-run double to get the Tigers up 2-0.
  • Morgan State tied the game in the second off a solo home run then back-to-back doubles.  Next inning, the Bears got three more including a bunt single and pair of sacrifice flies for a 5-2 lead.
  • Madeline Harris entered a pitched a 1-2-3 fourth inning.  But, the Bears added a combined seven more runs in the fifth and sixth frames.  Towson had one more push in it, combining a Ramirez triple off the wall and a Chloe Poulich double to bring in Ramirez, but could not get closer and fell in game two 12-3.
Inside the Numbers:
  • With the game one win, Lisa Costello has 753 career victories as head coach at Towson.
  • Cori Jones's home run in game one was her first home run with the Tigers.  She had a home run on Apr. 4, 2021 while with Hartford.
  • Julia Jackson has thrown nine complete games this season.
Next Game:
Towson returns to CAA play this weekend, beginning with a Saturday, April 2nd single game at noon vs. Drexel in Philadelphia.
