GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Towson University baseball team tied a season-high in hits and led after seven-and-a-half innings but fell in the Sunday getaway game 6-5 at UNCG.
Elijah Dickerson's two-run go-ahead triple in the top of the eighth gave Towson (2-10) a 5-4 lead headed into the bottom of the eighth. UNCG (6-5) got back the lead with back-to-back RBI singles. Towson go its leadoff hitter to second in the top of the ninth, but could not score him.
Key Stats:
- Three Tigers had a three-hit day as Towson earned 11 hits, tied for the most in a game this season.
- Elijah Dickerson came a double shy of the cycle, hitting 3-for-5 with a solo home run and two-run triple. Jordan Peyton hit 3-for-4 with a stolen base while Bryce Frederick hit a double in a 3-for-5 afternoon.
- On the mound, starter Nick Janowicz had a no decision, going four innings with four runs and six strikeouts. Jake Pecilunas had a two-inning scoreless relief outing with two Ks, but the loss went to Nolan Bolt (0-1), who had two runs allowed in 1.2 innings.
- For UNCG, Hogan Windish had a first inning three-run home run, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
How It Happened:
- Towson got things going quickly with an Elijah Dickerson solo home run in the top of the first for a 1-0 Tigers lead.
- UNCG got power of its own in the bottom half of the frame, a three-run dinger by Hogan Windish, to go up 3-1.
- Towson's small ball play in the second got it a run. Two free passes and a Jordan Peyton bunt single loaded the bases up. Chandler Castleberry hit a sacrifice fly to send a runner home and make it 3-2 UNCG.
- Nick Janowicz held down the Spartans in the second through fourth innings, but UNCG got a run back in the fifth. In the top of the sixth on Castleberry's ball four, Jake Lysaght scored on a wild pitch to get Towson back within a run.
- Towson retook the lead in the top of the eighth. With two outs, Castleberry singled then James Moses got hit by a pitch. Dickerson blasted a triple to deep center to drive home two and make the score 5-4 Towson.
- UNCG got back the lead with four consecutive singles, going ahead 6-5. Bryce Frederick led off the ninth with a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt but was stranded. UNCG took the win 6-5.
