TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team had a strong pitching performance to open Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play vs. Delaware but was edged by the Blue Hens 4-1 on Friday afternoon.
Towson (8-18, 0-1 CAA) scored in the opening inning and led after three innings against Delaware (13-10, 2-2 CAA). Delaware tied the game in the fourth and scored three in the fifth, holding the rest of the way for the victory.
Key Stats:
- Nate Nabholz (1-3) pitched three scoreless innings to begin the game, but had four runs, just three earned, in his 4+ inning start. Nolan Bolt followed in relief with 4.2 scoreless innings, striking out three batters.
- Jack McLaughlin notched two hits in four at bats for the Tigers while each Danny Becerra and Elijah Dickerson hit safely in the game.
- For Delaware, Joseph Carpenter finished 2-for-5 with a two-run double in the fifth inning. Starter Chris Ludman (3-2) won the game with seven innings, one run and three strikeouts with Mike Biasiello picking up his fifth save with the final two scoreless innings thrown, striking out four.
How It Happened:
- Towson got on the board in the opening inning, beginning with James Moses reaching on an error then stealing second. Danny Becerra lined a single through the right side as Moses got third and took home on a throwing error, making it 1-0 Towson.
- Nate Nabholz pitched the first three innings scoreless. In the top of the fourth with first and second and two out, a bloop single to center by Joey Loynd allowed a run to score, tying the game at 1-1.
- The top of the fifth saw Delaware combine three hits, a walk and an error to plate three runs, capped by a Joseph Carpenter two-run double to right field riding the wind, to give the Blue Hens a 4-1 lead.
- Nolan Bolt pitched 4.2 scoreless innings in relief to keep Delaware's advantage at three. But Towson could not muster any more runs and fell 4-1.
Inside the Numbers:
- James Moses has reached base in his last 22 games, earning two walks, while Burke Camper has gotten on base his last 15 contests, also having a walk.
- Nolan Bolt has gone at least 3.2 innings in his last three appearances, allowing one earned run or fewer in all three outings.
