Towson Baseball Comeback Attempt Falls Short vs. Delaware

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team got the potential tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth but came up short in a 4-1 defeat vs. Delaware on Saturday afternoon.
 
Towson (8-19, 0-2 CAA) scored its first run on a Danny Becerra RBI triple in the eighth, getting potential tying runs on base in the eighth and ninth, but Delaware (14-10, 3-2 CAA) held for the victory.
 
Key Stats:
  • Towson pitching combined for just two earned runs on four total runs.  Starter Nick Ramanjulu (2-3) got the loss on 5+ innings, having three runs, only two earned, and striking out six.
  • Danny Becerra reached twice in the game with a triple and a walk, going 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Jake Lysaght also reached twice, going 1-for-2 with a walk while Jordan Peyton was 1-for-3 with a run and a walk.
  • For Delaware, Jake Dunion was 4-for-4 in the middle of the order, having a double, run and RBI.  Starter Joey Silan (1-3) picked up the win with six scoreless innings, striking out seven, while Dom Velazquez notched his first save of the year on three innings, one run and five strikeouts.
How It Happened:
  • Delaware got on the board first, piecing together three singles for a run scored and a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.
  • The Blue Hens added another on a two-out RBI single by Jake Dunion in the third to go up 2-0.
  • Towson threatened with runners on the corners with two out in the fifth, but a line out ended the inning without any runs.  Delaware added another via a Joey Loynd sacrifice fly in the sixth to go up 3-0.
  • The Tigers got the bats going in the bottom of the eighth, beginning with an infield single by Jordan Peyton.  Two batters later, Danny Becerra lined a ball into the right-center gap to the wall for a triple, scoring Peyton to pull Towson within two at 3-1.
  • Delaware got back a run, unearned, on a sacrifice fly in the ninth.  Singles by Max Samson and Nolan Young set up two on and two out, but a flyout ended the game in favor of Delaware 4-1.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Jake Pecilunas made his 93rd career appearance on the mound for Towson, adding to his program record.
Next Game:
Towson and Delaware are back tomorrow at Schuerholz to play at 1 p.m.
