Towson Baseball Falls to Delaware Despite Early Lead

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team led 2-0 after the first inning but could not get any more runs, falling to Delaware 6-2 in the series finale.

Towson (8-20, 0-3 CAA) got the early advantage off an Elijah Dickerson RBI triple and a Burke Camper sacrifice fly.  Delaware (15-10, 4-2 CAA) scored the next six runs en route to the victory.

Key Stats:
  • For the Towson pitching staff, only two of the six runs were earned.  Nick Janowicz (0-3) had the loss in his start, going five innings with three runs, just one earned, and four strikeouts.
  • Jack McLaughlin, wearing Bryce Frederick's #26, went 2-for-3 in the game.  Elijah Dickerson was 1-for-4 with an RBI triple in the first inning.
  • For Delaware, JJ Freeman got on base four times, hitting 2-for-3 with two walks and an RBI.  Starter Wyatt Nelson got a no decision, going 3.1 innings with two runs and a strikeout, while reliever Zach Klapak (4-0) picked up the win with 5.2 innings of scoreless ball, striking out three.
How It Happened:
  • Towson got on the board first in the opening frame.  James Moses walked, took second on a wild pitch and third on a sacrifice bunt.  Elijah Dickerson belted a ball into the right-center gap for an RBI triple to give Towson the lead.  Burke Camper brought Dickerson home on a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 Tigers.
  • Nick Janowicz held off the Blue Hens in the opening two innings, but Delaware drew a bases loaded walk in the third to pull within one at 2-1 Towson.
  • Delaware took the lead in the top of the fifth, first tying the game on an infield single for JJ Freeman.  On a fly out, an error on the relay throw allowed another run to score to give Delaware a 3-2 lead.
  • Towson drew a pair of runners via walk in the bottom of the fifth but could not score.  A Nick Vera solo home run in the sixth pushed the score to 4-2 Blue Hens.
  • Towson looked to muster a rally in the eighth off a Jack McLaughlin single but could not score.  Delaware added two more unearned runs in the ninth en route to a 6-2 win.
