TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University softball team had an early lead in its Wednesday afternoon game against George Mason, nearly coming back with a three-run home run from
Chloe Poulich, but just came up short in a 6-4 defeat.
Towson (12-23) pieced together a
Mackenzie Lake double and
Chloe Poulich triple to take a first inning lead vs. George Mason (18-15) and kept the advantage through the first three frames. The Patriots scored six runs in the final four innings. Towson tried to come back on Poulich's three-run blast but could not bridge the final gap.
Key Stats:
- Chloe Poulich reached base four times, earning a 2-for-2 day with a three-run home run, RBI triple, a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Briana Ramirez was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run while Mackenzie Lake had a first-inning double, scoring twice.
- Towson starting pitcher Madeline Harris (0-4) got the loss on the circle, going four innings with three runs, all in the fourth inning, striking out four.
- Haley Taormina was George Mason's top hitter, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and two runs scored. Jordan Anderson (1-0) got the victory, pitching five innings with a run allowed. Madi Williams picked up the save with the final two innings thrown, having three runs and two strikeouts.
How It Happened:
- The Patriots threatened to take an early when E.J. Bankson doubled with one out and advanced to third base on a single by Mariana Bozek. But Bozek was thrown out trying to steal second base. Pitcher Madeline Harris escaped the jam when she struck out Haley Taormina. In the Tigers' half of the first, they scored a run with two outs. Mackenzie Lake doubled. Moments later, a triple by Chloe Poulich drove her in. Cori Jones was retired on a fly ball to end the rally.
- After being shut out for three innings, the Patriots rallied for three runs. Haley Taormina led off with a double and stole third base. She scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Rachel Warrens. Nicole Bechtel doubled to put the go-ahead run on second base. Harris struck out Jordan Anderson for the second out. But, Sydney Bales smashed a 3-2 pitch over the centerfield fence for her first home run of the season and a 3-1 lead for George Mason.
- After a scoreless fifth, George Mason added insurance with a pair of top-of-the-sixth doubles for a run, then in the seventh, the Patriots hit a two-out solo home run by Taormina, then following a Warrens double, Bechtel singled to right to allow Warrens to score. George Mason led 6-1 going into the bottom of the seventh.
- Nicole Kidwiler and Briana Ramirez hit back-to-back one-out singles to got on base. Two batters later, Poulich sent a ball over the center field fence for a three-run home run to pull Towson within two, but the Tigers did not get closer and fell 6-4.
Inside the Numbers:
- Briana Ramirez increased her hitting streak to 10 games with a bunt single in the fifth.
- Chloe Poulich hit her third home run of the season, tying for the team lead with Mackenzie Lake. Poulich also tied the team lead in triples with two.
Next Game:
Towson will host Delaware this weekend to resume CAA play. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 16 at noon.
